THE ASTOEIAN.
TUESDAY- July 29, 1873
An Adroit Kobbcry.
"Witli its unfailing fertility, of resource,
the Figaro recounts the following extra
ordinary histery: There are in Paris two
or tliree women whose scandalous fortune
lias removed them from the demi monde,
and placed them in a world apart. One
of these women is notorious throughout
Europe for adventure.-:, and her diamonds
are said to he worth eight millions of
francs.. Among the most intimate of her
visitors was a Sir Joseph D., a gentleman
of distinguished appearance and perfect
manners, whose advances were not dis
couraged by Madame . It would
teem, however, that the fascinating Eng
lishman sought her diamonds, for he turn
ed out to he the leader of a hand f rob
lters admirably organized. His plans
were deeply laid. In the month of Janu
ary last year, he pursuaded the husband
of !Madame , for she was married,
that his rooms would be marvelously im
proved, if the ceiling were painted with
frescoes and he recommended an Italian
artist, whopame from lilan, and as one
of the band, profited by hia presence in
the apartments to take impressions of all
the locks.
A month afterward the Englishman
persuaded M. that his wife's dia
monds were not secure, and advised him
to buy a safe from an English maker
whom he could recommend. The safe
duly arrived. At the end of two months
" hir Joseph" warmly recommended one
of his friends, a jeweler of Munich, who
was anxious to copy the magnificent jew
elry for Empress of Austria, and Madame
granted the wish. Copies having in
Lliis way been obtained, a valet, who was
in the interests of the Englishman, having
access to the depository of the jewelry by
means of false keys, gradually abstracted
the gems and replaced them by artificial
ones. The deception passed unnoticed
until a friend of Madame , on the eve
of a visit to London, borrowed a single
hAonc, supposed to be of immense value.
In some business transaction with a noted
London jeweler the stone happened to
come in question, and the jeweler declared
it to be a were imitation. The police were
put upou the track, and so the affair came
to light.
Expelling Flies from Rooms. It is
stated that if two and a half pounds
of powdered laurel leaves are macer
ated or boiled in two gallons of water,
until their poisonous quality is ex
tracted, and with the solution a white
wash is made, by adding as much
quicklime as can be slacked in it, and
if a room be whitewashed with the
preparation, flies will not settle on the
walls for six months. It is also as
serted that if paste, made by stirring
together one pint of the powdered
laurel leaves with a quarter of a pint
of glicerine, be applied to windows
and door casings, a room so prepared
will soon be emptied of flies. Two
applications of this paste are said to
be enough to keep a kitchen clean
of insects for a fortnight.
There is nothing disagreeable or
deleterious to human beings in the
odor of the wash or paste, though lau
rel leaves, or laurel water, taken into
the stomach, acts as a violent poison.
isashville's oldest inhabitant is
much interested in Bryant's "Homer1
because, as he says, although he
did'nt know Ajax personally, he wras
very well acquainted with A. Jackson,
and voted for him for President.
