A Isew Paper. The first number
of the Tri-Weekly Astorian made
its appearance yesterday. Its name
indicates its character, as it is to be
issued on each Tuesday, Thursday
and Saturday, and, judging by the
numcer before us, is very Astorian in
its tone, strongly advocating the, su
perior advantages of Astoria over all
other points on the Northwest coast
as the site of the great commercial
entrepot and center of the future.
Mr. Ireland, editor and publisher of
the Astorian is too, welt known to
the people of OregojQ as a newspaper
man, to neex an introduction at our
hands, an.d ve doub not he will
make. Jifa paper a success. His first
number is racy, newsy and neat.
Ve like its appearance, and vrish its
rospQrity. Oregonian. ,

SLVLL-POX CUEE.
Dr. Borzeau's Small "Box. Cure.
As this most loathsome of all diseases is li
able to break out amoving us at any. time, it is
well to bo prepared for it at all times;
Dr. Borzeau's Small-Pox Cure and Preven
tive, now prepared and kopt on hand at my
office, corner first and Main streets, one door
from First, is asuro euro or preventive for
that disease. Tho history of .this modicino
can not better bo explained by mo than by
inserting tho following somowhat condensed
letters. SAMUEL CORWIN. Paoi'iUETojt.
San Fkancisco, July 2, 1872.
My dear old friend, Samuel Corwin I have
no doubt but you will bo much surpriso J on
rocoiving this lottor, but, porhaps, notmoro so,
or moro gratifiod, than I was to hoar from
you. Tho manner in which I hoard from you,
and learned of your whereabouts, is this: I
happened to bo looking over an Orogon nows
papor and noticed your nanio, as ltopreaonta
tivo elect, from TiJJamook county. The thrill
qf pleasure which.1 experienced on reading, is
indiscrlbablo. The- many acts of kindnoss
which I received at your hands long yoars ago
have novfer boon forgobton, notwithstanding
oux corsespondonco has been broken for 17
year.3. "Woll, Sam, I won't attempt to givo
you mjorethan tho outlines of what has tran
spired with mo sinco wo last corresponded.
So many incidents of tho past, in which you
and I wore connected, crowd upon my mi&jd
that I cannot think or write of mysolf. Does
your mind over revert to the past, when wo
first met how you took me in as a partner,
when thoso who ought to have boon my best
friends throw off on me how wo got snowed
in and had to live on potatoes straight for six
weeks how good that grizzley moat tasted
what a disgraceful rotroat wo made from our
poor innocent Jack, when wo thought wa woro
besieged by a grizzloy. "Well, Sam, thoso
events of 1852 frequently furnish subject mat
ter for my thoughts, and, as I am writing to.
you, crowd upon my mind, but I will dismiss
them for the present to give place to that which
will, perhaps bo of greater interest to you.
I pocketed eleven thousand dollars out of the
"Deep Claim" youavo mo in Maraposa, and
started for homo in Juno, 1855. I invested
four thousand dollars in real estate in this
city, and loft it in care of McLano, our old
cabin mate. My property hero ha3 yielded
mo a handsomo income, and quadrupled in
value. I wont into business in X.ow York city,
in which I was very successful sold out two
years ago, sinco which time I have boon trav
eling through tho European countries. You
know I used to have a weakness for traveling;
woll, it has been gratified fo my heart's con
tent. While in Franco I was takon with tho
f small-pox. Tho lady of the inn told mo that 1
was fortunato to take the disoasoatthat place,
as there was an old small-pox doctor near by
who never failed to cure, no matter how bad
the disease; and sure enough, I began to re
cover within four hours after commencing to
take the medicine, and in twenty-four hours
1 felt quite well, I was so much olated with
tho magical effects of tho modicino that I was
dptermmed, if possiblo, to obtain tho formula,
in which I succeeded, by paying handsomoly
and promising not to divulge it in Franco.
I soo from Oregon papers that you havo tho
disease among you. Tho enclosed packago
contains tho formula and sufficient material
for family use. I havo cured all tho cases
that I havo como in contract with, and find it
an infallible cure and preventive. "Whon you
answer this, I will forward sufficient of tho
material to mako you a fortuno, as 1 havo am
ple, and rest assurod I reciprocate past favors.
I will closo for tho present and await anxi
ously your answer. Direct to San Francisco,
as 1 will remain hero about two months.
Yours etc., ISAAC PxfClIAltDSOX.

The Paper will "be independent of litics
in all its views, expresbecl or implied, and
will be conductodlwitlitheaim in view to
make it wholly said solely devoted to the
best interests of this -State. The Com
merce of Oregon, its Agricultural, Manu
facturing and Mechanical interests, the
progress and prosperity of the people, will
receive special attention. The Astorian
will recognize the Fanners and Mechanics
of Oregon as men of thought and judg
ment, and will respect their efforts to make
their influence known and recognized in
the marts of trade, in the counting rooms
of business, and in the halls of legislation.
"We shall neither make nor encourage a
war upon, nor wage any conflicts with, any
enterprises, associations or men engaged in
legitimate pursuits where success depends
upon the interest and continued earnestness
of the people. "While we shall endeavor to
show the truthfulness of the old maxim,
that " thelaws favor the diligent," weshall
strive to harmonize interests calculated to
he of direct benefit to the State.
Astoria is the sea port of Oregon, 'fias an
excellent harbor, and vessels of the deep
est draught enter in perfect safety at all sea
sons. Casnparative statistics show less per
cent, of losses on the Columbia Rivey Bar
for the pabt twenty years, than at the en
trance to any other port in the United
States, and the iiicts may he easily pro
duced to show the fallacies of such wide
discriminations by underwriters and in
surers, in favor of other ports, and against'
the port of Oregon . It was the Gold Min
ing excitements of 1849 that built up Cali
fornia so rapidly as to overshadow and out
strip this part of the-northwest possessions,
at a time when the first propositions for
communication between itfew York ,and
Astoria were about to be inaugurated.
The gold discovery of 1849 set Oregon hack
ana maae our sister oiaie wnat sne is.
Kow. things are upon a more equal footing,
with lands and Agriculture for a basis of
.future operations with the difference- in
la vor of Oregon inner cheap lands and va
ried natural resources yet undeveloped.
Temporarily there is a stringency in the
money market, but business generally con
tinues good, and as many vessels are em
ployed in the carrying trade, if not more,
than in past years of our prosperity. A few
more acers planted, a few more fish and
oyster marketed, a few more tons of coal
and iron. mined, more home rescources de
veloped and manufactories established,
Vxill improve the outlook very much.
The history of Astoria is full of interest
from the arrivals of Captain Gray in t&e
Summer of 1792 to the present time, all of
which "will receive due attention The ar
rivals and doDartures of vessels at Astoria,
a&dthe business of the surrounding coun
try, having no journal to correctly repre
sent the interest, has of necessity been neg
lected, to the detriment of the entire State.
"With the view f supplying this want the
