The jMJople of Clateop and the adjacent counties naturally feel inclined to wend their way to Astoria for the iwupoBe-oi asetuementoi tueu- legal r ,,, .,. .' atiairsj etc., their very rjresence alone in our midst hriium innnn ,mn.f us. and scarcely a visitation is made but supplies of some kind are ob tained of our merchants, or arrange ments made for the purchase of the- same, and the disposal of their own surplus goods. In crease the facilities for getting here, and you increase iheir visitations. Goods that were wont to perish as being too small in quantity for the espeifse of trans portation to a liiadcet, will find their. way here also; and wJieu we aggre- gate- the amount, we will find it a figure tlaat will surprise us. Increas ed facilities for quick communica tions -with business centres, inva riably induce immigration to and settlement of districts that were hith erto deemed inaccessible. x Now we have often heard the fal-1 la.cioriS assertion "that when we get population we shall then be better able to and will then build roads." That is, we would, in the language of 'the facitious. "AVilkins Micaw ler,,J "wait for something to" turn up,,; but does it not behoove us to do something towards making it turn up. Put our own shoulders to the wheel of progress, opon up our county to the prospector and settler, absorb and increase the business already within okv graspw Tvre have not at present one single, practicable wagon road leading out of Astoria, and yet, with comparative little outlay, we can open out the partial roads and trails leading to Young's iRiver, and the fertile settle ments on the Xehalcix. The trail from here to Upper Aston as been recently rendered passable by the energy and public spirit of a few in dividuals. Prom thence to the Xeha lem, it is rendered almost impassable by feson of fallen timber and un derbrush, and then only with diffi culty by pack teams. The latter trail traverses the old bed,of the United States military road, con structed at so much expense in for mer years. By-a comparative usual outlay both of these trails could be made practicable for wagons and be a credit to our county. JKbr is this all, facilities for riding and driving would enhace the attractions of our city for a Summer resort. Its pres sent advantages of being in sight of - the ocean, ever in the enjoyment of its breezes, the opportunity of almost constant communication with other portions of the country, and the ready facility for' rowing and saijng, would thus obviate any semblance of shipping point fortlieir.prod.ucts, and a Sas$of supplies tliey n ay require nrintrtnTT?. 1. - C J jvuyjwuxg.iu tnu meuiib ui ui version.
