CZ3 THE ASTORIAN, ASTORIA, OEEGOlfc 3D. C. IRELAND JEdior. THURSDAY .'. Sttcy 3, 1873 COMMERCE AND TRADE. During the month of June 1S73, there were 15 arrivals of sea going craft at this port, and 12 departures, of this number. five were steamships arriving, and six were steamships departing, From Hong Kong we have two arrivals, the Garibaldi and Forward, and one departure the Pu ritian. The Steamship California has made the quickest trip on record dur ing the period under reveiw, having left Sitka on the evening of the 12 th, and reached her berth here on the evening of the 18th. She experienc ed one of the severest storms on the passage that was ever known, having been prevented from using her en gines during the prevalence of the gale, and was compelled to simply work to keep offshore in the vicinity of the Wright disaster. The ship Hermine arrived here on the evening of the 27th from Liver pool, consigned to Janion and Rhode's Portland. She brought a very large and valuable cargo of assorted goods. On the 29th the schooner Mar garet Crockard sailed from this port with a valuable cargo for the Sand wich Islands. The Canadienne, a French ship of large capacity which arrived in 3Ia from Hong Kong, cleared on the 5 th for Puget Sound to load for an out ward voyage with lumber and piles. The brig W. H. Meyer, which ar rived on the 6th from San Francisco, returned with a heavy cargo of lum ber from Weidler's Mills, for lower California. Capt. Simpson, with the bark Whis tler, is now over thirty days out with a full cargo of lumber from Knappton, for Jose Manual Brown, of Mejel lones Pay, Bolivia. The brig Orient, Capt. Wheelright came up in ballast, and returned loaded from this port for San Fran cisco. The regular steamers in the trade with San Francisco now are Ori iiamme John L. Stephens, and Ajax. rlhey arrive here on 'Tuesday, and clear on Saturday. The barkentine Jane AFalkinburg, owned here by Capt. George Flavel, has just left the dry docks near San Francisco where she was thoroughly repaired. She has gone to Honolulu, and will return here, as she is a pack et running regularly in the trade' of Oregon and the Islands. The duties paid on Railroad Iron at Astoria for the month of June a mount to $9,223. This iron came from England consigned to the Ore gon Central Railroad Company. Town Hall. The people of Clatsop Plains, a town organization similar to small municipalities, were incorpo rated by act of the. Oregon Legisla tive assembly several years ago, for ' the goverment of home affairs. The organization iskinown as the Town of Clatsop Plains, and has a- Marshal, Recorder, and other Town officials. The people having recently decided lo build a town Hall, the contract for Hich building has been let to Mr. Carnahan. ,u.M.MER RrjsouTs. It will be seen by reference to our advertising col ons' that besides the new and elegant y iy finished Sea-side House, presided oyer by Charley Dexter on Clatsop Ijeacb, Mrs. Cloutrie is prepared to receive visitors in her new two-story house, which is all hard-finished and iicatly furnished. Mr. Grimes has also re-opened his house for the neason, and Mr. A. C. "Wirt is fixed to entertain or convey travelers vis iting this most inviting of all places on the Pacific Coast. . . The barkentine Jane A Falkinburg having been thoroughly fitted for sea left San Fnmcisfco last Thursday for Honolulu. - - - Tillamook is to haVe-a celebration on the Fourth ofulvV '" l(1 OUR iCOAX FIEUQS, Considerable excitement was crea ted among the workmen on the cut at the junction of Main and Eighth streets, the other day, over the dis covery of coal. The vein is distinct ly shown, but only four inches thick. The coal is semi-bituminous, very clear and hard, similar to Seattle coal, v But we presume all the coal blossoms immediately about the mouth of the Columbia, are like this little joker, now you see it, and now you don't. The land formation of the vicinity is very much broken up, and dmicpted, not as some suppose, by volcanic up heavels, but by irregular deposits made during the drift period. By a proper system of deep prospecting, there is no doubt good coal beds might be found in easy reach of Col umbia river navigation. But for sur face, or hillside strata, it is necessary to go back from the river far enough to get beyond the effect of the irre- 0 vwiw wvv il-lWlCU lAJf -which distance is but a few miles, as existing coal beds on the ISehalem attest. New Wharf and Dock. "Workmen are engaged in driving piles for a large and expensive wharf and ware house for Capt. George Flavel of this city on the river fronting and abreast his former warehouse. The new wharf will be carried out thirty feet farther than the old one, and will have a frontage of 300 feet with slips conyenient for any class of vessels from a sloop to a man of war. The depth of the dock from front to rear will be in the neighborhood of 300 feet. "When finished this wharf and warehouse in connection with others here, will be capable of supplying any demand that will be likely to be made upon our port for some time to come. Capt. Flavel is one of our most enterprising citizens, and to undertake such a work in a dull sea son is deserving of success. He has confidence in the country, and proves his faith by such vorks as this. Silver Quartz. We were shown yesterday a very rich specimen of Silver bearing quartz rock found in the Coast range of mountains in this county, by a gentleman who. has spent much time in prospecting in the vicinity. The specimen is rich in free silver, and when placed un der a magnifying glass resembles a mountain of crystalized rock silver-j ed all over with the treasure. The specimen will be sent abroad for an assay, and when the value of the rock is ascertained we shall further allude to it. ' Arrigoxi's. We doubt if there can be found on the continent of America a more popular host than S. N. Arrigoni, of the Occident of this city. Mr. Arrigoni has for very many years kept Hotel in Oregon, and his name is nearly as well known as that of the most famous of Wash ington or Kew York. Here in his pleasant and scrululously neat apart ments, distinguished guests have been entertained from nearly every part of the habitable world, and none have ever departed dissatisfied, or, we will venture to say have forgotten Arrigoni. This season he" is better prepared than ever before to enter tain' visitors. The Occident has been repainted and frescoed,' and looks like a palace. Coast Charts. Complete charts of the Columbia river, bar and shoals of Cathlamet Bay,, (six smiles &bove As toria,) have been published by the United States Coast Survey. Since the last survey, the shoals at the Hog's Back (as called) have filled so much that almost'every ocean steam er (as well as-sail vessel) is compell ed to wait at Astoria for tides. If the government could hurry up the work of printing one chart a year or so be fore another one is necessary, the act would be worthy of special notice. Kew Bridge. Mr. Grimes, rdpri-' etor of the hotel which bears hi, name on Clatsop Beach, is engaged in the construction of a new bridge across Necanacum (orLatta7s), river which .will very materially shorten the distance. dn4 that vicinity,- vand i e a ueuer roaa to travel. Cement Rock. In the last edition we referred to a quality of stone in this county, which had been tested by Prof. Hopkinson, and which we believed would produce an article of cement equal to that now imported so extensively into the United States from Europe, and known as Portland cement." A practical treatise on limes,4 hydraulic cement and mor tars, published by authority of Major General Gillmore last year, describes this rock and the process of tests to be applied to it. The experiments and researches which furnish the groundwork for all the original mat ter contained in the work were con ducted under the authority of the Engineer Bureau of the war Depart ment, and wrere completed in the Summer of 1861. Two methods were employed, one by hand and the oth er by machinery, in making the sev eral qualities of Portland cement concrete applied in various ways for various purposes, in the construction of the fortifications on Staten Island, New York Harbor, of which Gen. Gillmore had chargeas Superintend ing Engineer. The special informa tion given, therefore, was derived from the experience of two years, with regard to the cost and propor tions of the constituent ingredients, cement, lime, sand, gravel and broken stone, as well as the cost of the finished concrete in position, and may be relied upon as correct. Chap ter Y., in which the method of analy sis is given which applies to the Clat sop county stone, was prepared by Capt. E. C. Boynton, late Professor of chemistry in the University of Mississippi. After a' practical de scription of the rock as we find it here the method of testing the rock is de scribed, by the application of acids, and the test made of this rock in our office, is proof according to the book that the Clatsop rock is just the arti cle needed to save the general gov ernment thousands upon thousands of dollars annually, and-make 'the region, and the corporations, com panies or individuals that produce it and manufacture it, wealthy beyond account. We invite the attention of monied men to this industrial pur suit. Hon. Elwood Evanswas among the passengers arriving yesterday. JETe is returning to his hom in Olympia from a session of the commissioners of the Centennial anniversary of American Independence, held re cently in Philadelpia. Philip Lowr of Tangent, was in the city yesterday on business in connec tion with the farmers proposed ware houe at Astoria, " To keep warm on a cold' day ijhe women double the Cape, and the men .double the horn.
