SIUSLAW NEWS | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2021 | 7A Growing Rural Oregon advances rural economic development in Florence The Ford Family Foun- dation is proud to an- nounce the launch of a new framework for supporting rural entrepreneurs called Growing Rural Oregon (GRO). Four Oregon cities will participate in GRO’s first cohort: John Day, In- dependence, Klamath Falls and Florence. Community leaders will work with a coach to build a local en- trepreneurial ecosystem, follow an evaluation plan and collaborate as a learn- ing community for a five- year period. GRO is an economic development framework that aims to foster more prosperous and resilient rural cities and towns across Oregon through entrepreneur-centered de- velopment. Starting with the recognition that every community already has en- trepreneurial talent, GRO helps identify the tools needed to support and uplift rural entrepreneurs. GRO strategies aim to leverage unique communi- ty assets that can stimulate innovation and sustainable economic vitality. “Klamath IDEA is proud to be a part of the first GRO cohort in partner- ship with The Ford Fam- ily Foundation,” shared Kat Rutledge, director of Klamath IDEA in Klamath Falls. “We’ve been working hard on our entrepreneur- ial ecosystem, and it’s ex- citing to have the Founda- tion come alongside us to demonstrate what entre- preneurship can do for our rural communities.” “The Foundation is proud to catalyze GRO because it is a communi- ty-centered and commu- nity-driven framework,” said Kathleen Flanagan, director of Community Economic Development. “GRO is not a service provider or a stand-alone program — it is an inten- sive journey to jumpstart entrepreneurial behavior. This framework engages the broader community in growing prosperity togeth- er over time.” The GRO framework’s approach is consistent with the Foundation’s community-led approach to supporting vital rural communities in Oregon and Siskiyou County, Ca- lif. “This is a long-term investment in the health and livelihood of entre- preneurs in rural Oregon,” explained Foundation president, Anne Kubisch. “From lenders to eco- nomic development orga- nizations to government officials and community residents — GRO takes all of us collaborating togeth- er.” GRO has been devel- oped in partnership with national experts from Net- Work Kansas and e2 En- trepreneurial Ecosystems. Oregon-based partners include Oregon Econom- ic Development Districts and Central Oregon In- tergovernmental Council (COIC). COIC will man- age GRO’s implementa- tion, leveraging commu- nity building capacity and direct relationships with the community mem- bers in the four partici- pating communities. The Foundation is grateful for COIC’s expertise and col- laboration to engage com- munity residents in the GRO framework. NetWork Kansas, a 501c3 nonprofit organiza- tion, is dedicated to mak- ing entrepreneurship a priority for economic and community development in the State of Kansas. It connects aspiring entre- preneurs, emerging and established businesses to a deep network of busi- ness-building and commu- nity development resource organizations across the state. e2 Entrepreneurial Eco- systems helps communities throughout North Amer- ica increase prosperity through entrepreneur-fo- cused economic develop- ment and ecosystem build- ing. e2 supports a national team of practitioners who bring research, coaching, incubation, market intelli- gence and other expertise to economic development. e2 Entrepreneurial Ecosys- tems, formerly the Nation- al Center for Rural Entre- preneurship, is hosted by NetWork Kansas.
