Florence-Siuslaw Lions Club has two eyeglass pro- grams in our community. The most visible project is eyeglass and hearing aid recycling. The other proj- ect is providing free eye exams and eyeglasses to qualified individuals. The Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation (OLSHF) administers the Lions Eyeglasses Recy- cling Program (LERC) for the State of Oregon. Over 75,000 eyeglasses are col- lected every year from communities across the state, mostly thanks to the efforts of Lions Clubs who collect the eyeglasses. Lions Clubs set up drop boxes (provided by OLSHF) throughout their communities. Each club is responsible for transport- ing the collected eyeglasses to the OLSHF warehouse in Portland. Other service organizations partner with Lions by donating eye- glasses they have collected. Since 2002, OLSHF has partnered with Coffee Creek Correctional Facil- ity (CCCF) in Wilsonville to process eyeglasses. At CCCF, 30 women inmates (who have been accepted into the Paraoptometric Training and Eyeglass Re- cycling Program) clean, calibrate and sort eyeglass- es for mission trips. Sever- al graduates have secured work in optical careers af- ter their release. International nonprof- its request inventories of calibrated “mission ready” eyeglasses for their trips. Through the OLSHF of- fice in Portland, vouch- ers are issued that enable monitoring the number of eyeglasses distributed. OLSHF partners include Oregon Lions Clubs, Pe- ruvian Lions Clubs, Lions Mexico Vision and Health Care Clinic, Lions in Sight, FACES Foundation, Northwest Medical Teams, Mercy Ships, Sea Mer- cy, Mercy Corps, Hope Alliance, VOSH and the AMIGOS. Countries that have benefited from eyeglass distribution include Ton- ga, Eastern Europe, Mexi- co, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Solomon Is- lands, West Samoa, El Sal- vador, Peru, and Kenya. Collection boxes for eyeglasses and hearing aids can be found at sever- al locations in Florence: • Florence Eye Clinic • Focal Point Eye Clinic • ReStore for Habitat • Grocery Outlet • Elks Club • Florence Pharmacy • 3 Rivers Casino • Siuslaw Public Library • Burns Mortuary • Big Dog Donuts Applications for glasses and exams are available at Grocery Outlet at the first cashier station.
