SIUSLAW NEWS | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2021 | 3B Firefighters to dispose of old Christmas trees Once again, the Siuslaw Valley Firefighters Asso- ciation, representing local volunteer firefighters, will be conducting the annual Christmas Tree Pick-Up event in January. Firefighters will be avail- able to pick up old Christ- mas Trees on Sunday, Jan. 2, or Saturday, Jan. 8. Simply call the Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue Administrative Office at 541-997-3212 to schedule a pick-up. A minimum do- nation of $5 is suggested and you can place it in a plastic bag and attach it to the discarded tree. The Christmas Tree Pick-Up is a major fund- raiser for the Firefighters Association, with all funds donated going to support association events such as our scholarship fund, which recognizes two grad- uating seniors each year. This is a way for the community to help proper- ly dispose of old and dried out Christmas Trees and support local firefighters. Learn more at svfr.org. As ocean waters throughout the Pacific Basin become more acid- ified, the biogeochem- istry of marine waters also changes along the thin ribbon of the Or- egon coast and in bays and estuaries. These open coast and estuarine areas are inhabited by diverse communities of shellfish, including oysters, clams, mussels, abalone, crab, shrimp, sea stars sea ur- chins, and many others. The presentation will de- scribe ocean acidification as an emerging threat to marine communities, provide a description of the potential impacts to commercially and recre- ationally valuable groups of shellfish, and character- ize the capacity of living shorelines such as kelp beds and eelgrass to serve as a buffer to acidified ma- rine waters. Ac- quiring new information about red abalone biology and habitat, history of the fishery in Oregon and ge- netic information, allows researchers and managers to work towards a conser- vation and fishery man- agement plan. ODFW and Oregon Sea Grant have partnered to collaborate with university research- ers, agency staff, and fishery participants to de- termine a framework for an environmentally con- scious conservation and management plan for red abalone in Oregon.
