While damage to the front of the ambulance is thought to be considerable, Fire/ EMS Chief Michael Schick stated, “We are grateful that no one was injured in this accident.” Western Lane Ambulance District provides emergen- cy medical service (EMS) to 17,500 people over 564 square miles. Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue provides an all-hazards emergency re- sponse to 14,000 people over 98 square miles. Together, their agencies include full- time, part-time and volun- teer personnel that respond to an average of 4,500 calls per year. On Dec. 22, Oregon State Police announced the com- pletion of the investigation into the Sept. 20 four-vehi- cle crash on Highway 126 near Walton, which led to the death of Springfield res- ident Sarah Susman, an em- ployee with Western Lane Ambulance District who was 25 years old. On Dec. 22, Oregon State Police arrested Shane Tyler McVay for manslaughter 1, DUII and recklessly endan- gering. McVay was lodged in the Lane County Jail. On Sept. 20 at approxi- mately 7:14 a.m., Oregon State Troopers and emer- gency personnel responded to a four-vehicle crash on Highway 126 near milepost 37. Preliminary investiga- tion revealed a Kenworth log truck, operated by Mc- Vay, 64, of Eugene, was eastbound when the load- ed trailer tipped over. The trailer struck a westbound Toyota Prius, operated by Susman and a Dodge Ram rus. The Florence Events Center is among four new high-volume vaccination sites opening across the state to provide easy access to COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots. Other loca- tions include Pony Village Mall in North Bend, the Police arrest driver in September’s four-vehicle crash on Highway 126, which left one dead towing a boat, operated by Randall Tokich, 70, of Eu- gene. The Dodge Ram then struck an eastbound Ford Mustang, operated by Jor- dyn Tippett, 20, of Coquille. Susman sustained fatal in- juries and was pronounced deceased. McVay and Tip- pett were transported to Sa- cred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend with injuries. Tokich had minor injuries. Susman was a part-time Western Lane Ambulance District employee and was driving to work when the accident occurred. She was recently hired with WLAD after completing the EMT Intermediate program at Lane Community College.
