Friends of Florence seeks drivers Here’s a way you can join in the fight against cancer without reaching for your wallet — donate some time rather than dollars. The Friends of Flor- ence, a local organiza- tion which runs a free bus to Eugene five days a week for cancer pa- tients to receive radiation treatments, is in need of volunteer bus drivers to keep the bus rolling. The job would involve getting behind the wheel once or twice a month for about four hours. “We’re a nonprofit or- ganization which relies on financial donations from a variety of sources, but just as valuable to us to keep serving the com- munity is the time donat- ed by our volunteers,” said Larry Bacon, a Friends of Florence board member who, with his wife Kay, schedules the drivers. “We like to have 22 driv- ers on our schedule, and right now we are a few short.” That means the avail- able drivers must take ex- tra driving days too often. Volunteer drivers need not have a commercial driver’s license. However, it helps if they have expe- rience driving larger ve- hicles. The Friends group does provide training so before volunteers go out on the road unsupervised, they can feel comfortable driving the bus, a 15-pas- senger vehicle much like those used as shuttles by rental car companies. Friends of Florence takes special precautions during the pandemic. Ev- eryone on the bus wears masks, and the seating arrangement keeps pas- sengers and drivers a safe distance apart. Protocols are in place to ensure all passengers and drivers are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The inside of the vehicle is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized af- ter every use. The bus leaves Peace Harbor Hospital at 8 a.m. each weekday and travels 160 miles round-trip to Willamette Valley Cancer Institute and the Oregon Urology Institute. Riders can also be picked up at Mapleton and Veneta. Friends of Florence has been transporting cancer patients for free for 34 years. “It’s a real service,” said Bacon, who once rode the bus himself as a patient. “Often people are too sick to drive themselves to the valley, and it is difficult to find others to take them over. The thanks drivers receive nearly every day from grateful passengers is heartfelt and reward- ing.” To volunteer or ask questions about being a driver, contact Bacon at 541-997-8180 or lba- con569@gmail.com. is the permanent, log-free guttersolution!* ® L ea (j(iu; uan d Get it.
