See more on page 1B Big bowls to fill By Chantelle Meyer Siuslaw News Fifteen hundred empty bowls. That’s how many artist-created vessels will be included in the two weekends of the 25th Empty Bowls event. Held at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., Dec. 3 and 4 and Dec. 10 and 11, Empty Bowls is a fundraiser for Florence Food Share that unites artists, chefs and the community. “A whole variety of artists have contributed,” said Bonnie MacDuf- fee, who has helped with Empty Bowls for the past 20 or so years. Vicki Sieber-Benson and Kathy Shamey have coordinated the bowls, gathering all 1,500 creations made since the last Empty Bowls After hiatus, the Empty Bowl fundraiser returns was held in 2019. “It takes a village to make a bowl,” the committee said, detail- ing how some artists could craft their designs at home, but needed resources to glaze and then fire the bowls. This was especially import- ant with the COVID-19 closures of Lane Community College Florence Center’s clay studio and art classes at local high schools. Artists were able to come togeth- er to create the bowls, ultimately providing the record number in- cluded this year. Empty Bowls features the sale of bowls and other ceramic pieces, with most bowls selling for $10. It will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 3 and 10, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 4 and 11. Admission is free. The event will look a little dif- ferent than in the past to include COVID-19 safety protocols. Proof of vaccination or a nega- tive COVID test within 72 hours of the event will be required for entry. “We don’t want to discourage people from coming,” MacDuffee said. “We just want people to know that there will be that requirement in order to get into Empty Bowls.” Masks are required indoors at the Florence Events Center, and so- cial distancing will be maintained. The bowls on display will be spread out, and there will be one- way traffic. In addition, volunteers will be strategically placed to assist shoppers with examining the bowls See BOWLS page 5A Lane County Sheriff ’s Office (LCSO) continues to search for a person involved in a violent incident which took place in the Florence area on Nov. 25. LCSO has identified 40-year-old Robert Gavin Bowers as a person of interest in the Thanksgiving day stabbing assault in the South Jetty area south of Florence. According to Sgt. Tom Spel- drich, deputies are still seeking to speak with Bowers. “Bowers has been previously identified as a person of interest regarding the assault that took place on Thanksgiving Day near the South Jetty Staging Area,” Spel- drich said. “During that incident, two victims were assaulted with a knife and received serious physical injury. One victim was stabbed and the other was cut.” Both victims are expected to survive. The incident prompted emer- gency response sirens, first to address the injuries and then as LCSO continued to search for the suspect. “Bowers is likely homeless and most commonly travels by foot,” Speldrich said. “He could be armed and should not be approached.” LCSO described Bowers as a white male adult with long brown hair and stands around 5’8” to 6’ tall. He was last observed wearing a brown or black jacket. He was last seen on foot headed into the dunes from the Goose Pasture ATV staging area. Anyone with information regarding Bowers’ whereabouts is asked to call 911. The Kiwanis have been offer- ing this generous opportunity for years but since the onset of COVID last year, have changed the process to incorporate safety protocols suggested by the Oregon Health Authority. That meant the second year of drive-through dis- tribution of the dinners. The preparation for the meal re- quired the work of dozens of vol- unteers to prepare, cook and pack- age the hundreds of meals. Clara Kuhn is one of the coor- dinators of the dinner effort, and she was pleased with the both the Kiwanis Club of Florence distributed 615 Thanksgiving meals to the community from Florence Elks Lodge #1858 last week. The event allowed vehicles to drive through. preparation process and the dis- tribution of the meals. Volunteers worked on Tuesday cooking the turkey, potatoes and vegetables and spent the day on Wednesday plating and bagging the dinners for distribution. Originally the plan called for the preparation of 500 meals but due to the early feedback received, the Kiwanians upped the number of plates prepared.
