2B | SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2021 | SIUSLAW NEWS TRAIL PHOTOS BY ZAC BURTT/SIUSLAW NEWS Waxmyrtle Trail is within the Siltcoos Recreation Area seven miles south of Florence, just past Dunes City. The trail provides vistas of the Siltcoos River Estuary and the Pacific Ocean and is accessible for all skill levels. FREE from page B1 are lots of nearby options. Trout fishing is always a great choice for beginners; try spots that were stocked heavily during summer and earlier in fall as they may have holdover trout. In eastern Oregon, try the Crook- ed, Blitzen, Fall, Metolius and Wallowa rivers for trout fishing. The coho run was a bright spot for fish this year and there are still coho available in some areas, including Siltcoos Lake, south of Florence. November can be one of the best times of the year to crab and myodfw. com has all the information you need to  get started. Currently, crabbing is open in bays, beaches, estuaries, tide pools, piers and jetties along the entire Oregon coast (though closed in ocean waters until Dec. 1). The Oregon Department of Agricul- ture regularly tests shellfish and closes areas when naturally occurring biotox- ins get to levels that make crabs and clams unsafe to eat. Currently there are no shellfish closures, but people should remember to call the ODA Shellfish safety hotline at 1-800-448-2474 or check ODA’s Recreational Shellfish page  at www.oregon.gov/ODA/programs/ FoodSafety/Shellfish/Pages/Shellfish- Closures.aspx before they head out. TIME from page B1 coach has the offense, de- fense and substitution deci- sions to make. Players decid- ing to play their own game may find the bench. During my first basket- ball game my senior year at Warrenton High School, I was the middle player on a three-on-one fast break. I decided to drive to the bas- ket. Even though I made the shot, I was benched. Coach Cole, his first year at War- from page B1 past the bridge on the left at what is known as the Stagecoach Trailhead parking lot. A valid rec- reation pass is required, or hikers may pay the $5 per day fee. Waxmyrtle Trail follows Siltcoos Outlet, a small river that flows to the ocean from Siltcoos Lake, the largest lake on the Or- egon Coast. The trail is roughly 3.4 miles round trip and one can reach the beach at the end of Siltcoos Out- let about 1.5 miles from the beginning of the hike. The final .75 mile before the beach is the most challenging part of the hike, as it is sand. When looping back, hikers have two options: return on the same trail they came or follow a long-closed forest service road through Waxmyrtle Campground. Both are essentially the same dis- tance. The beach at the end of Waxmyrtle Trail is special as it is somewhat remote. Often, visitors will find they have miles of beach to themselves. Also, after a big storm or especial- ly high tides, the beach is prime beachcombing territory. It is not un- common to be the first to stumble upon the elusive renton, wanted to let me and the entire team know we were to play it his way. Since Warrenton had no success at basketball for a few years, it was understandable things needed to change. Coach Cole stayed at Warrenton High School for 30 years with many trips made to the state tournament doing it his way. Similarly, Coach Chris Johnson plans the Siuslaw cross country runners’ strat- egy. The runners do not just unbroken sand dollar or another of nature’s gifts washed in with the waves. The difficulty of the hike is minimal, and all ages and skill levels should have no issues. The trail is wide enough for runners and pets to pass hikers. Waxmyrtle Trail is spe- cial as it allows a hiker to enjoy the coastal rain for- est, sand dunes and ocean beach all in one hike. The trail also offers a spectac- ular view of the Siltcoos River Estuary. There are benches along the hike for one to marvel at the spectacular views of the estuary and ocean or to just take a break. Wildlife is plentiful. The estuary is a protected breeding ground for the western snowy plover, so access is limited. Hikers also have the possibility of seeing other birds of numerous types, deer, riv- er otter and even an occa- sional black bear (hope- fully from a distance). Plus, the Siltcoos Recre- ation Area lies within the Siuslaw National Forest, which is filled with spots ripe for adventure. For more information on Waxmyrtle Trail or other recreation oppor- tunities with the national forest, go to www.fs.usda. gov/siuslaw. run — they train under the watchful eye of their coach. The success of the Siuslaw Cross Country teams says his coaching decisions have been wise. The recent State Cross Country Meet results can attest to that. The next time you think you could have made a bet- ter coaching decision, go to the local Boys and Girls Club and volunteer to coach a sport they offer to the youth of our community. Just make sure you make the right call.
