6A | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2021 | SIUSLAW NEWS Library Tidings Book Review “What Comes After” by Joanne Tompkins After the shocking deaths of two teenage boys tear apart a community in the Pacific Northwest, an unfa- miliar pregnant girl emerges out of the woods and into the lives of those same boys’ families. Why the boys died and what their tragedy has to do with this girl are the propulsive mysteries at the center of JoAnne Tomp- kins’s story. But just as urgent is the question of how the families will move forward. What comes after grief? What does forgiveness look like? In misty, coastal Wash- ington, Isaac’s teenage son, Daniel, is gone, leaving Isaac alone in a rambling Vic- torian home, shocked and grieving. The friendships and faith that once nour- ished him are flickering. Next door, Lorrie, a work- ing single mother, struggles with the final act committed by her own teenage son. The two parents are separated by only a silvery stretch of trees, but emotionally they are stranded, isolated by their great losses — until they meet Evangeline. Fiery in hair and in spir- it, 16, pregnant and alone, Evangeline’s unexplained arrival changes everything. At first it feels like a bless- ing, and a bridge across a divide. But the girl clearly is News about the Siuslaw Public Library By Kevin Mittge hiding something about her connection to the boys and their deaths. Soon all three characters are forced to ex- amine what really happened in their overlapping pasts, and what it all possibly means for a shared future. With a suspenseful mys- tery at its core, “What Comes After” is an unfor- gettable story of loss and anger, but also of kindness and hope, courage and for- giveness. It is a deeply mov- ing account of strangers and friends helping one anoth- er forward after tragedy as they learn how their losses can unite them all. Florence opens recruitment for city committees The City of Florence is seeking volunteer applicants for the City of Florence Plan- ning Commission and the Florence Urban Renewal Agency. The Planning Commission reviews and makes recom- mendations on the Compre- hensive Plan, subdivision and zoning ordinances, and other planning rules and regula- tions. The commission also serves as the Design Review Board acting to determine whether proposed develop- ments uphold the zoning and subdivision ordinances of the City of Florence. Florence’s Planning Com- mission consists of seven members, of which five must live inside city limits and two may live within the Urban Growth Boundary. Planning Commission meet- ings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. The Florence Planning Commission currently has one inside city limits position open and all applicants must live within the city limits to be eligible. Persons interested in posi- tions should expect to attend all Planning Commission meetings and devote time for study of issues prior to meeting attendance. Volun- teer time is vital in working towards solutions to local government issues. Do you have an interest in supporting the revitalization of the Florence downtown area? Are you interested in helping efforts to develop downtown for the it’s tour- ism, commercial prospects, and as Florence’s community core? Then consider joining the Florence Urban Renewal Agency (FURA). FURA serves to imple- ment the projects and efforts of the Florence Downtown Plan through execution of the tax increment financing. As a timely example, FURA’s most recent large-scale proj- ect was the development and financing of the ReVision Florence Streetscape Project on Hwy 101 and 126. FURA consists of nine members, of which five shall be citizens at large. Special consideration will be given to the potential appointment of elected members of the governing bodies of Western Lane Ambulance District, the Port of Siuslaw, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue and/ or the Siuslaw Library Dis- trict. Currently, there is one opening on the FURA Board. FURA generally meets once per month. Persons in- terested in positions should expect to attend recurring meetings and devote time for study of issues and per- formance above and beyond meeting attendance. Volun- teer time is vital in working towards solutions to local government issues.
