serving than Jason,” To-
maro said. “Jason is an in-
credibly hard worker. He
never gives up on the ball,
he fights for possession
and works the ball up the
field once he has it. He has
fantastic footwork and a
great sliding tackle where
he comes up with the ball
and keeps attacking. Jason
also demonstrates com-
mendable sportsmanship.
It does not take long for
our opponents to figure
out that Jason is a major
part of our offense and
mark him heavily, but he
never gets frustrated; he
just keeps working at win-
ning the ball and making
plays. This year he scored
four of our 12 goals, as-
sisted on three more, and
had a non-keeper save.”
The other Siuslaw soc-
cer players on the all-
league team were juniors
Noel Hernandez, defend-
er, and Alex Goss, mid-
fielder, and sophomore
Derrick VanDuch, goal-
keeper. All three were
awarded honorable men-
tion.
Jayden Cameron of
Cottage Grove was named
Sky-Em League Soccer
Player of the Year and his
coach Vern Stewart was
named Coach of the Year.
For volleyball, Siuslaw
had two players on the
Sky-Em League first team:
senior libero Hayden
Muller and junior middle
blocker Desi Tupua.
Muller was an integral
part of the Vikings’ suc-
cess this season and was
known for being an emo-
tional leader for her team
with her nonstop hustle
on the court.
“Hayden is all over the
place, diving, rolling and
digging up balls from
some really great hitters
from around the Sky-Em
League,” said Siuslaw Vol-
leyball Coach Kari Blake.
“She picks up a ton of
balls that probably should
be dropped. Hayden has a
lot of fun on the court and
keeps the team smiling.
She is such a hustler; and
she’s the base to us getting
our big kills. Finally, if it
wasn’t for Hayden’s excep-
tional passing, it would
make our setters job
much, much harder. She
just did such an amazing
job this season.”
When talking about
Tupua, Blake praises her
well-developed instincts
on the court.
“Desi has such a knack
for knowing when to tip,
when to go in for the
kill and when to play it
safe, always scoring a
lot of points for us,” said
Blake. “I appreciate her
control in the game. She’s
a smart player who knows
when to go for a big kill
versus when to tip it into
a hole. She’s calm on the
court for her teammates
and her contribution is al-
ways substantial.”
Freshman outside hitter
Mylee Blake was named
to the second team and
senior setter Zoe Alberty
received honorable men-
tion.
The honors continued
for Cottage Grove, as Lion
Gracie Arnold was named
Sky-Em League Volley-
ball Player of the Year and
her coach, Abby Lad, was
Coach of the Year.
For cross country, all-
state teams were also
announced along with
all-league. Because the
Vikings were both league
and state champions,
these awards were numer-
ous.
Four SHS runners
On Halloween, Dunesday
Gaming hosted a fundraiser
for Safe Shelter for Siuslaw
Students. Dunesday reached
out about this fundraiser
after learning about Safe
Shelter from the clothing
giveaway event earlier in the
year.
Brooke Kosten, owner of
Dunesday Gaming, was ex-
cited about the project.
“It was really great to have
the place full, and we know a
big part of that was support
earned both first team
all-state and first team all-
league. They were senior
Rylee Colton for the girls
and, for the boys, senior
Chad Hughes and ju-
niors Sam Ulrich and Kyle
Hughes.
Siuslaw Coach Chris
Johnson has lots of
good things to say about
Colton.
“Riley has come so far,”
the coach said. “She has
really blossomed athlet-
ically and became like
a different person. She’s
more outspoken and has
taken on a leadership role
with this extremely young
team. She takes it upon
herself to lead by example
every day.”
Johnson also raves
about Chad Hughes.
“When COVID hit, I
think people went two
ways,” said Johnson.
“They either stayed inside
and got frustrated and
depressed or they said
‘Hey, I’m going to take ad-
vantage of this situation.’
Chad took advantage. He
said, ‘I’m going to take
this opportunity to get
better’ and he just went
to work, that whole time.
He just got super, super
strong aerobically and just
became kind of a killer.”
For the boys team,
sophomore Braydon Lin-
ton was named to the
Sky-Em second team and
also was honorable men-
tion all-state. His class-
for your organization and
mission,” she said. “Although
the fundraising aspect was
modest, hopefully we created
some awareness around your
work as well. For our part,
we definitely had some new
and smiling faces in the ar-
cade, which is always great.”
The fundraiser raised
$425, a great success for both
Safe Shelter and Dunesday
Gaming. A few prizes were
given out, including Prom-
ising New Gamer for “Gig-
mate Talen Ross was also
second team all-league,
along with junior Jacob
Blankenship. Sophomore
Dylan Jensen was third
team all-league and hon-
orable mention all-state.
Along with Colton,
the rest of the girls team
gling Elmo” who was seen
pulling the step stool up to
just about every retro arcade
game.
“We also did our part to
keep the dentists in town in
business!” Kosten said about
the candy consumed during
the event.
