SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2021 | 9A Movie offers look to hopeful future The Siuslaw News is once again partnering with City Lights Cin- emas to offer a free community screening of an environmental movie. “2040” will be presented Nov. 15 at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Following its world premiere at Berlinale ‘19, Damon Gameau brings “2040,” his visionary film which offers new hope to the cli- mate crisis conversation. Motivated by his 4-year-old daughter and concern for the plan- et she will inherit, Gameau, Aus- tralian award-winning director (“That Sugar Film,” 2015) and ac- tor, embarks on a global journey to meet innovators and changemakers to discover what the future of the planet could look like by the year 2040 if we embraced the best solu- tions already available to us, and shifted them rapidly into the main- stream. Guided by the voices of 100 child interviewees aged between 6 and 11 who describe the kind of world they would like to see by the year 2040, Gameau draws on the best minds from around the world to focus on climate, economics, tech- nology, civil society, education, agriculture and sustainability to conjure a positive portrait of what “could be” instead of the current dystopian future we are so often presented. Aimed at a broad audience in- cluding children and their fam- ilies, Gameau blends traditional documentary with dramatized sequences and high-end visual ef- fects to show how these solutions — including seaweed farming, em- powering girls and women with education, automated vehicles and decentralized, renewable energy systems — could regenerate the world for future generations. Tickets for “2040” are free for the two community screenings on Nov. 15 while supplies last. These are available at City Lights Cinemas 1920 Highway 101 in Florence. This screening is sponsored in part by Central Coast Disposal, County Transfer and Recycling and Laurel Bay Gardens.
