Siuslaw d Elmira 25-7,
25-15 and 25-10
Oct. 13 was Senior Night
and Siuslaw’s last regu-
lar season home game of
the season. Viking seniors
Norton, Muller and Al-
berty were honored for
their contributions to the
SHS volleyball program
throughout their entire
high school careers.
During pregame festiv-
ities, all three girls were
accompanied to the court
by their parents and sib-
lings, and were presented
with flowers, balloons and
heart-felt homemade post-
ers celebrating each play-
er’s achievements during
their four years at Siuslaw.
The electricity generated
by the pregame ceremony
seemed to light a fire un-
der the entire Viking team
as they came out hot. It was
13-0 before Elmira scored
their first points and SHS
never looked back after
that.
Appropriately, the match
versus Elmira was a se-
nior-led effort.
Alberty again had an
outstanding night in the
setter’s position. She had
31 sets to target to set her
hitters up. She gave the
front row some very qual-
ity sets.
“Zoe runs the court fast,
which helps keep the tem-
po of the team up,” Blake

Siuslaw d Marshfield
25-10, 25-12, 17-25, 25-17
On Oct. 12, the Vikings
traveled to Coos Bay, with
revenge on their mind, for
a much anticipated second
chance at the Marshfield
Pirates. Besides a loss to
first place Cottage Grove,
Siuslaw’s only blemish on
their Sky-Em League re-
cord was a close loss to
Marshfield earlier in the
season.
“Our goal tonight was
to play a clean, fast game
and we did just that,” said
Blake.
The Vikings won, three
games to one.
The highlight of the
night was the play of the
Viking back row. Senior
Hayden Muller had 32 digs
and 41 perfect passes and
sophomore Meika Shap-
pell had 28 perfect passes
and 44 digs.
“Our back row tonight
was on fire,” said Blake.
“Our entire back row was
taking some big hits off of
Marshfield and Meika had
some amazing digs to keep
the ball in play. Hayden’s
passes were impeccable
throughout the whole
match, and I was just so
impressed with how well
the back row was reading
the court.”
Alberty had another
outstanding night setting
and was nearly error free,
which gave the Viking hit-
ters a lot to work with.
“Zoe does a great job at
keeping the tempo up and
keeping our team running
at a high pace,” Blake said.
“Both our setters, Zoe
and (sophomore) Brynlee
Manues, did an excellent
job of accurately spreading
the ball around to our big
hitters.”
Tupua had a big night
again with 18 kills, 2 tips
for points and 6 blocks and
5 aces.
“Desi is such a smart
player,” the coach said.
“She reads the court so well
on both defense and of-
fense and she really keeps
teams on their toes when
she’s in the front row. Desi
is a hard-to-read player
who uses multiple tempos
and different attacks to
earn points. She was really
smart tonight, which put a
said. “She was spreading
out the sets well and just
played a really smart game.
Her serves were perfect on
the night with 6 aces and
no missed serves.”
Muller, like she has all
season, played back row
beautifully. She had 19
digs, 19 perfect passes.
“Hayden just had this
wonderful energy radiat-
ing,” the coach said. “She
was having a lot of fun on
the court and, as always,
kept the team smiling.
Hayden is such a hustler
and she’s the base to us
getting those big kills. If
it wasn’t for Hayden’s ex-
ceptional passing, it would
make our setters job much,
much harder. She just did
such an amazing job to-
night.”
Norton had a big night
also. She put 4 kills and 3
blocks on the books. Nor-
ton played both right side
and middle hitter.
“Middle hitter was Al-
izabeth’s old position, so
it was fun to see her excel
at it tonight while having
a lot of fun playing an old
position that she’s obvi-
ously still very familiar
with,” Blake said. “Aliza-
beth was all over tonight.
She had quite a few digs
and had really solid, qual-
ity net play. She came alive
tonight, and what better
night than Senior Night.”
With the win, Siuslaw
sits alone in second place
in the Sky-Em standings,
just a half game back of
first place Cottage Grove.
The Viks travel to Coos
Bay today, Oct. 16, for a
tournament at Marshfield.
Then, SHS finishes out the
regular season next week
with two tough games on
the road. The first, Tues-
day, Oct. 19, against Junc-
tion City, the team direct-
ly behind the Viks in the
standings. Following that
on Thursday, Oct. 21, the
last game of the regular
season, Siuslaw travels to
Cottage Grove in what
could end up being the
unofficial Sky-Em Cham-
pionship Game.
“It was a really special
night honoring our se-
niors,” said Coach Blake. “I
couldn’t be more proud of
the hard work they’ve put
in to get us to this point.
Next week will be a really
big week and I think these
girls are ready to face the
challenge.”
The top team in the
Mountain West League
came to town on Oct. 12
and provided quite a chal-
lenge for Mapleton.
Mohawk came into the
game undefeated in league
play at 9-0.
The Mustangs are, most
likely, the best team the
Sailors have played this
season and it showed when
they took care of MHS
with relative ease in three
sets.
Shird had a solid night
Triangle Lake on Oct. 14
after press deadlines. This
was the last game of the
season for the Sailor vol-
leyball team and also

lot of points on the board.”
Mylee had another good
night with 12 kills.
“Mylee did a great job
tonight. She had some real-
ly great swings and she was
just hitting the ball really
hard tonight,” said Blake.
Outlaw came out of the
gates on fire and had 3 kills
in the first 4 plays. She fin-
ished the night with 9 kills
along with 2 blocks.
The Vikings held a block
party in Coos Bay with
19 total for the team on
the night. Rhianna Lane
blocked 5 to go with 4 kills.
Besides those previously
mentioned, Hennessee had
3 blocks, Norton 2 and Al-
berty 1.
“I was really proud of
the girls tonight,” Blake
said after the match. “They
played extremely well as
a team and individually.
They started strong and
never lost their focus. They
are really finding their
stride and I couldn’t be any
happier with their perfor-
mance tonight.”

VICTORY from page B1
the night three games to
one.
These two wins were a
reward for the hard work
the Mapleton volleyball
team has put in all season.
For Shird, “Getting
those wins shows that all
the hard work we’ve put
into this sport can pay
off.”
The win was a team
effort as contributions
came from all over the
court. Milbrett racked up 6
more aces (giving her a
stunning 32 aces in one
night) along with 5 kills.
Helen served great and had
9 aces. Her sister, Opal,
had 3 aces and 4 kills.
Shird continued her stellar
play with 7 aces and 5
kills.
S
Sailors 13-3 to take set
three 25-15.
Game four was all
Mapleton.
Senior Opal Burruss
started in the serving spot
and, after a kill by senior
Micayla Flansberg, Opal
served 6 straight aces to
put the Sailors up 7-0.
Shird also had 5 straight
aces at one point and
Mapleton won the set 25-8
and the game 3-1.
Freshman
Morgan
Milbrett had a stunning 26
aces in the first match.
Other highlights from the
stat sheet included Opal
with 5 aces, 3 kills and 2
blocks. Shird also had 4
aces and 2 kills in match
one.
The second match of the
night was more of a chal-
lenge for the Sailors. Siletz
Valley got behind early in
set one but were able to
keep the game close.
Mapleton tied it at 15-15
after back-to-back aces
from freshman Helen
Burruss, but the rest of the
set was all Warriors as
they outscored the Sailors
10-3 and won 25-18.
Amongst
fans
of
Mapleton volleyball, this
team is known for their
resiliency and ability to
remain positive regardless
of the situation. That
showed by the way they
played after going down a
set early.
“We encourage and sup-
port each other when we
aren’t doing well. It’s a lot
easier to stay positive
when you have good team-
mates cheering you on,”
said Shird.
As she rained down aces
on the Warriors, it seemed
as though Milbrett was not
interested in letting Siletz
Valley stay in the match.
She started set two with
three more to put MHS up
early. Shird, Opal, Helen
and sophomore Tiyler
Gloe also scored aces for
Mapleton. The Sailors
won set two 25-21.
Siletz Valley started set
three hot and went up
early, 8-3. Their lead was
short lived as once again
Mapleton took over using
excellent
serving.
Numerous aces by Helen,
Opal, Milbrett, Shird and
Flansberg gave the Sailors
a 25-17 victory.
In the final set of the
night, Mapleton leaned on
its service game again.
The Sailors took a lead on
the first point and the set
went back and forth until
an ace by Helen to put
MHS up 10-9. That lead
was never relinquished.
Final score for set four
was 25-16 and the Sailors
