On Sunday, Siuslaw Outreach Services (SOS) Director Bob Teter led a group of local students and concerned in- dividuals on a somber march from Veteran’s Park in Historic Old Town to the boardwalk at the Port of Siuslaw. Members of the SOS Board of Directors, joined by Florence May- or Joe Henry and his wife Pam, were participants in the silent vigil that made its way slowly down Bay Street. Florence Police Department led the way, with lights flashing, as people applauded and signaled en- couragement to the marchers “This past year we have all been met by challenges, hardships, failed relationships and economic uncertainty. Social media and the news outlets are filled with stories of people screaming and yelling at each other for any number of rea- sons. Many feel their lives are spi- raling out of control,” Teter said. The event featured classic automobiles, a chili cook-off, vendors, plants, animals and mu- sic. The large open space was cho- sen as it allows for many people to gather in the outdoors, in close proximity to Mapleton’s small business district, with some so- cial distancing possible. During the festival, the crowd moved between vendors and the music area. Members of local veteran groups were on hand to post the colors and emergency respond- ers from Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue, led by Fire Marshal Tony Miller, and Lane County Sheriff ’s Office brought ladder trucks and other lifesaving equipment as part of a county-wide push to bring attention to Fire Safety Month, which occurs during October. The event was organized by Mapleton-area resident Jami Crawford Sautner, who said she was pleased with the turnout and with the community wide sup- port she received for the festival. “I just want to thank so darned many people for making Satur- day’s third Autumn Festival a success,” she said. “Sue and Phil Davidson allowing us to use the property was such a blessing.” She also thanked her “amazing friend Amy Clawson,” who sang the National Anthem while the See FESTIVAL page 6A On Saturday, Oct. 2, just prior to 8:30 p.m., the Lane County Sheriff ’s Office (LCSO) received the report of a domestic dispute at a residence in- volving a firearm in the 87000 block of Rice Road in Mapleton. The caller stated that 28-year- old Jazmine Thein used a firearm to shoot at her brother. Her broth- er was able to flee to a neighbor’s house. LCSO deputies arrived and were able to confirm that Thein was still inside the residence. Over the course of the next sever- al hours, deputies worked to negoti- ate and de-escalate the situation so that she could be taken into custody safely. Shortly after 6 a.m., however, dep- uties found her deceased in a bed- room from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot. No shots were ever fired by depu- ties during this incident.
