SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2021 | 3B SOCCER from page 1B play. “In the first half, we ap- plied a lot of pressure in the opponent’s end,” said Tomaro. “We were doing better at some of the things that have been plaguing us in previous games; for ex- ample, going to passes and winning the ball in the air.” Elmira scored first on a long high shot which gave them some momentum, which helped them to score again before Siuslaw could answer. Senior Jason Garcia fi- nally got the Vikings on the board with a goal from Elmira’s penalty area. Gar- cia has been Siuslaw’s most consistent player and is the leading scorer for the Viks. The rest of the game was a series of attempts by both teams to get a breakaway on the other team’s defense. Fatigue became a factor for Siuslaw. “In the second half, the players were tired, and it showed in their ability to get to the ball and to make successful passes,” said To- maro. The game ended with a victory for the Falcons, 2-1. Though the loss is dis- appointing, the Vikings are showing significant improvement as they head into the second half of league play. Siuslaw has two home games next week against two of the top teams in the Sky-Em league. On Mon- day, Oct. 4, the team faces Cottage Grove, followed by Marist on Wednesday, Oct. 6. Both games are at 6:30 p.m. at the Siuslaw soccer field at the corner of 27th and Oak streets. Admission is free. A weekly roundup of shopping, savings and doings around town. I have lived in Florence for over 40 years. I can safely say I have seen more runners training since 1996 than I saw in the years lead- ing up to that time. It is a common occurrence for me to see groups of runners be- fore and after school. Quite often, they are running with an older man who, until just recently, seemed to run effortlessly with the members of his team. It is a real challenge to watch a cross country meet. The runners bunch-up, a gun sends them off, and then several minutes lat- er they come back. There must be technology that can make it easier. In “Wonder Wom- an 1984,” arrows were launched into the air with the color of the runners in order. Of course, there are too many team members to launch arrows. As our Siuslaw High School cross country teams work towards their ultimate team goal, I hope more than just parents and friends will come support them. They have put Florence on the map. So I say, go energized runners! Keep on running and running and running. Do you part and volunteer today to help support these organizations in our community.
