The win put Siuslaw (2-1 Sky- Em) in a tie for second, with Marshfield (2-1), a half-game behind leader Cottage Grove (2-0). The home team came out hot and went up five points early, 9-4. The Falcons never gave up that lead and took set one 25-20. The Vikings rarely let their emotions get the best of them and did not appear to be shaken by going down early. The team looked loose between sets. Viking Coach Kari Blake took note and credits sophomore Zoe Alberty with being one of the emotional leaders for Siuslaw. “Zoe had to dig some pass- es out of the net to keep the ball in play and she just did an outstanding job of keeping her teammates positive,” said Blake. “She is always looking at what we can do to improve, and I appreciate her mindset on this team.” Two straight kills by junior Desi Tupua put Siuslaw up 3-0 — and they never looked back after that, dominating Elmira 25-6 to take set two. “I appreciate Desi’s control in the game,” said Blake. “She’s a smart player who knows when See VIKINGS page 2B Siuslaw soccer works on closing the gap Tigers and Falcons barely beat Viks on road By Zac Burtt/Siuslaw News The Siuslaw Viking soccer team headed to the valley for two Sky-Em League games this week, losing close matches to Junction City and Elmira. On Sept. 27, Siuslaw made the trip to Junction City to face the Tigers. Though they came home with a loss, the 3-1 margin was the closest of the league season for the Vikings up to that point. Siuslaw got on the board first when sophomore Braxton Hulet sent a per- fect drop pass to senior Jason Garcia who one-touched it into the goal to put the Vikings up 1-0. Junction City answered by scoring twice before the half to go up 2-1. “We were hopeful that we could even the score and gain an advan- tage, but the second half proved to be a back and forth battle that did not go our way,” said Viking Coach Lon- The Energized Runners The energized bunny keeps going and going and Retired teacher, coach going. The Tiger defense in the second half was stout and allowed very few chances for the Vikings. “Junction City kept our forwards from gaining any meaningful chanc- es in front of the net for the rest of the game,” said Tomaro. Though sophomore Derrick Van- duch had a good game in goal with eight saves, it was not enough as the Tigers scored once more in the sec- ond half for a final score of 3-1 Junc- tion City. On Sept. 29, the Vikings faced the Elmira Falcons on their home field. Siuslaw lost but gave up only two goals to Elmira, the least of any SHS opponent in Sky-Em play. Though the Vikings didn’t score in the first half, they also held Elmira scoreless. Since 1996, the battery keeping the cross coun- try teams running is Head Coach Chris Johnson. His enthusiasm and drive have been channeled towards having his young athletes achieve individual and team success. I know Coach Johnson is a man of numbers. He is truly interested in all his runners. This can be seen each week of every season he has coached. The im- proved times of all runners, not just the elite runners, are praised in newspaper arti- cles after each meet. He knows the importance of a cross country team. His team goals are district and state titles. To get there, the cross country team needs five quality runners. All five runners count in the final tally in team placement. The success of the cross country program can be seen painted on every wall of the Siuslaw High School Gym. Since 1996, the cross country program at SHS has won 35 district titles. The girls won 13 district titles in a row and 5 state titles in a row. The boys’ cross country team holds the all-time state meet record of 29 points in 2012. There have been 6 Viking first place finishers during this span. I confess I have very lit- tle experience with running cross country. I did feel like a cross country runner during my Pacific Universi- ty baseball days. Our coach had a saying, “As the legs go, so goes the heart.” So, we pitchers would run the hills and back roads of Forest Grove three days a week. We would often come into con- tact with Pacific University’s long distance track athletes while on our training runs. We could never be mistaken as track long distance run- ners. If SHS Football Coach Sam Johnson thinks his football players are the hard- est workers in the state, then Cross Country Coach Chris Johnson must also have the hardest working runners in See TIME OUT page3B
