CROW, OCHS pair for ‘Pawsome’ fundraiser
Local youth arts organi-
zation CROW (Children’s
Repertory of Oregon Work-
shops) recently teamed up
with the Oregon Coast Hu-
mane Society (OCHS) to
create a one-of-a-kind, hu-
morous photo calendar fea-
turing the adorable pets of
OCHS and CROW’s amaz-
ing Tutu Dads.
CROW Artistic Director
— and Calendar Photogra-
pher — Melanie Heard and
OCHS Executive Director,
Elizabeth Thompson collab-
orated to create the calendar
and “the result is something
pretty fabulous,” said Heard.
“Each calendar month fea-
tures a creative photograph
of an adopted (or adoptable)
pet, posed with an adorable
Tutu Dad.”
According to Thompson,
“When Melanie invited
us to partner on this spe-
cial FUN-draiser, we were
thrilled. It is PAWSOME
to partner with another lo-
cal non-profit in a way that
supports our community
members, both two-legged
and four-legged.”
Heard thanked OCHS
and its staff, particularly
Abby Stollar, for being a
huge help in the production.
For those who may not
know, the Tutu Dads are a

community members who

medic dance presentations.
tutu-dads.
“There are limited quan-
tities available, and this
calendar makes a hilarious
gift. Put one on your wall,
and we know it will put a big
smile on your face as you
navigate 2022,” said Heard.
“Plus, you can feel good
knowing that you are sup-
porting youth arts educa-
tion and Florence’s amazing
no-kill animal shelter.”
If people have any ques-
tions about this project,
they can contact CROW at

com or OCHS at exec.direc-
tor@oregoncoasthumane-
society.org.
“Some fundraisers are re-
ally...FUN!” Heard added.
THERE’S A NEW
(but familiar)
CROW’s Tutu Dads went
a little wild with pets
from Oregon Coast
Humane Society in a
special calendar.
They have become some-
what of an icon in Florence,
and one Tutu Dad even
reported that he had been
asked for his autograph in
the grocery store.
The Tutu Dads have de-
veloped a fan club following
and have a Facebook page.
All proceeds from the
sale of the 2022 fundrais-
er calendar go directly to
supporting operational ex-
penses for both non-profit
organizations. Any profits
will be split 50/50. It’s no se-
cret that CROW and OCHS
have both continued to
struggle to make ends meet
during COVID.
Calendars cost $15 each,
plus $6 flat rate shipping (if
mailed).
The calendar is 8.5-by-
11 inches and is made with
high quality, glossy photo
weight paper.
To purchase a calendar
in person, people can visit
the Humane Society Thrift
Shop, 1193 Bay St. in Flor-
ence, during business hours
or the animal shelter, 2840
Rhododendron Dr.

Oregon SNAP benefits increase in October
Starting Oct. 1, Orego-
nians who receive Supple-
mental Nutrition Assistance
Program (SNAP) will see a
permanent average increase
of about $36 per month,
per person to their regular
SNAP benefits. This perma-
nent increase is the result
of federal changes to the
Thrifty Food Plan. In addi-
tion, most SNAP recipients
in Oregon will continue to
receive additional emergen-
cy SNAP benefits in Octo-
ber.
The federal government
has approved emergency
allotments every month
since March 2020. This
gives SNAP recipients ad-
ditional support during the
COVID-19 pandemic.
In October, approximate-
ly 408,000 SNAP house-
holds will receive approxi-
mately $64 million in extra
food benefits in addition to
their regular SNAP benefits.
“We are grateful to have
the opportunity to increase
regular SNAP benefits and
to provide additional emer-
gency benefits to most
SNAP households in Ore-
gon,” said Dan Haun, direc-
tor of the Oregon Depart-
ment of Human Services
(ODHS), Self-Sufficiency
Program. “We also know
that many Oregonians are
still struggling to meet
their basic needs due to the
COVID-19 pandemic, and
we encourage them to con-
tact our partners at 211 and
the Oregon Food Bank for
support during this difficult
time.”
Emergency food benefits
will be available on Oct. 12
for current SNAP house-
holds. New SNAP house-
holds will receive the emer-
gency allotments Oct. 29 or
Nov. 2.
SNAP recipients do not
have to take any action to
receive these benefits as
they will be issued directly
on their EBT cards.
Questions about your
SNAP benefits should be di-
rected to the ONE Custom-
er Service Center at 1-800-
699-9075.
