12A | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2021 | SIUSLAW NEWS ‘Circles in the Sand’ beach art event returns to Florence Oct. 16 The nationally cele- brated Circles in the Sand beach art returns to Flor- ence on Saturday, Oct. 16, on the beach at Driftwood Shores. “This is always an up- lifting event at a great time of year to visit Florence’s beaches,” said Bettina Han- nigan, president/CEO of the Florence Area Cham- ber of Commerce. “Peo- ple come from all over. It’s wildly artistic, spiritually uplifting for many, and incredibly unique among beach events anywhere in the country.” A giant labyrinth will be carved in the sand begin- ning around 3 p.m. A pub- lic walkthrough the begins at 5 p.m. Low tide will be at 5:15 and sunset will be at 6:30. The event is free to at- tend and will be held rain or shine. Circles in the Sand events tend to draw big crowds, especially once the public is in- vited to walk through the labyrinths upon completion. Volun- teers will be on hand at the beginning of each labyrinth walk to help people keep physical distance. COVID-19 masking and distancing guide- lines in effect at the time will be enforced. Driftwood Shores Resort and Confer- ence Center, Sand Master Park Sand- boarding and Ven- omous Sandboards, Sea Lion Caves, Mo’s Seafood and Chowder and The Little Brown Hen restaurant are sponsoring the annual event. “We are eagerly St. Andrew’s blesses animals Sunday If you think your animal friends are a blessing to you and deserve a special blessing on the Feast Day for St. Francis, then please bring them to a celebration at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2135 19th St., on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021, be- tween 1 and 3 p.m. The celebration will be in the church’s beauti- ful labyrinth next to the Memorial Garden on the north end of the church parking lot. There will be live music by Miss Robbie Dee, activ- ities for children and ice- cream for kids of all ages — as well as pet treats for people’s animal friends. Animals must be rea- sonably well-behaved, and on a lead or in a carrier. If your pet is unable to attend in person, please bring a photograph, and the church will say a special prayer! St. Francis is the patron saint of animals and ecol- ogists. For more information, contact St. Andrew’s at 541-997-6600. Submit your community, arts, entertainment and other events to Editor@TheSiuslawNews.com looking forward to another amazing and unique beach draw,” said Lon Beale, event sponsor and owner of Sand Master Sand- boarding and Ven- omous Sandboards in Florence. “We would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone; and don’t forget, it’s completely free.” Jim Myers of Drift- wood Shores said, “We receive many calls about Circles in the Sand each year, and our guests really enjoy the event. Each of our rooms has beach and ocean view and guests will have a front row seat of this amazing artist in action.” Circles in the Sand was created in 2011 by labyrinth artist Den- ny Dyke. This will be Dyke’s fourth trip to Flor- ence. Dyke is based near Ban- don, Ore., and does several beach draws each year on Bandon’s beaches, which has led to him gaining an international following. In the early years of his work, it was not uncommon to see mentions of “crop cir- cles” or “alien art” after his work was found on the sand. His first intention was to create labyrinths so that ev- eryone could enjoy a walk on the sand. Dyke’s volunteer draw- ing team starts with a blank canvas of sand and then creates a beautiful work of art for all to enjoy. Every pattern has a single path, with no wrong turns or dead ends, that spirals and meanders throughout the entire labyrinth and re- turns near its entrance.
