2B | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2021 | SIUSLAW NEWS Officials seek feedback on management of recreation sites C ORVA L L I S — Fore s t officials are soliciting in- put from the public to help inform their management of developed recreation sites. Anyone who has vis- ited a recreation site on the Siuslaw National Forest is invited to share feedback about their experience and highlight which recreation sites and amenities are most important to them. This feedback, which is one element of the Recreation Site Analysis process cur- rently underway, will help recreation managers identi- fy where site improvements are needed, where there is demand for increased ame- nities, and where opportu- nities exist to reduce op- erations and maintenance costs. Recreation Site Analysis (RSA) is a tool to help na- tional forests sustainably manage their developed recreation program. Devel- oped recreation refers to recreation sites that include built features and infra- structure, such as camp- grounds, picnic areas, boat launches, trailheads, and day use sites. RSA helps national for- ests identify where they should focus their funding and workforce capacity in consideration of operations and maintenance costs, revenues, health and safe- ty, visitor and communi- ty needs, natural resource protection, equitable ac- cess, and more. The main output of this RSA will be a five-year program of work to guide management of the forest’s developed recre- ation sites. “We know we get a lot of visitors each year, but we’d like to have a better understanding of how peo- ple experience and use our recreation sites,” said Dani Pavoni, Recreation, Lands, and Heritage Staff Officer. “This information will help us figure out where and how we should target our investments and resources to best meet our visitors’ and communities’ needs.” The online feed- back form, www.fs.us- d a . g ov / d e t a i l / s iu s l aw / news-events/?cid=FSE- PRD953057, will be open through Nov. 19, 2021. More information on the RSA process can be found on the Siuslaw Nation- al Forest website at www. fs.usda.gov/detail/siuslaw/; Proposals being accepted for watershed restoration, projects on or near National Forest lands CORVALLIS — Siuslaw National Forest officials are soliciting project proposals to be funded under Title II of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Deter- mination Act. Individuals, non-profit organizations, local governments and oth- ers may propose projects that restore watersheds, decommission or main- tain roads, control noxious weeds or otherwise improve the condition of national forest lands. Proposed projects need not be implemented on For- est Service lands, but must show a benefit to national forest resources. Project proposals are due electronically by 5 p.m. Fri- day, Oct. 15. Projects will be reviewed and funding recommenda- tions made by a citizen Re- source Advisory Committee this fall or winter, with funds most likely becoming avail- able to groups by late winter or spring 2022. Application forms, instructions, and submission guidelines can be found on the forest web- site at www.fs.usda.gov/de- tail/siuslaw/workingtogeth- er/advisorycommittees. Approximately $1.9M is available in Title II funds for projects to be implemented in counties in and around the Siuslaw National Forest is anticipated in Spring 2022; this draft will be shared publicly for feed- back prior to being final- ized. The players were told that we all need to look forward to the future of program, espe- cially with us just switching over to 6-man. This gives us all, coaches and players, a year to adjust to a new system.” When the Sailors have been able to practice, the three upperclassmen in- volved in the program, ju- niors Jeff Bernhardt, Ma- son Flansberg and Emily Neece, have been “standout leaders on the field” ac- cording to Ford. The team as a whole, because of the unique situation a small school like Mapleton pro- vides, is used to being flex- ible and up for whatever comes their way. “The kids honestly re- ceived the news very well and all said that no matter what happens, they want to stay committed to the team and the year,” Ford said. “These kids know how to handle this type of situa- tion. This is not the first time in their playing career that a season ended due to low numbers, as each kid went through this in mid- dle school. They ended up using the season to stay conditioned and gain more knowledge of the game.” information on how to par- ticipate is also being posted any many recreation sites across the national forest.
