SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2021 | 3A Community News COMMUNITY GIVES THANKS TO AREA TEACHERS This month, the Florence United Methodist Church provided gift bags to teach- ers at the Siuslaw School District as a small back to school treat. This year, a de- cision was made to include all district staff as well as the Mapleton School Dis- trict. These additions meant the church made nearly 250 bags. “This last year and half has been extremely difficult for educators and staff as they have created a whole new paradigm for instruc- tion during the pandem- ic,” said Kathryn Water- man, Nurture Chair for the It’s Always Buck’s Season! The bags were filled with donations from Grocery Outlet, PeaceHealth, River Roasters, Fred Meyer, Bi- Mart, The Shippin’ Shack and Lovejoy’s Restaurant and Tea Room. Additionally, each bag contained a card of encour- agement from Florence United Methodist Church and a list of the businesses. “Educators and staff, con- gratulations on the 2021- 22 school year!” The card read. “The communities of Florence and Mapleton ap- preciate and support you as you make a difference in the lives of our students. Thank you.” The business sponsors jumped on board to con- tribute to this time-honored tradition developed by the church. “Thank you to those who were able to assemble and deliver the bags,” Waterman said. “Furthermore, we ap- preciate those who donated monetarily for this event.” LCC makes adjustments to fall term in response to COVID-19 Hours: Monday-Saturday 10:30am – 9:00pm We are open for Dine-In Cocktails to go & Take Out Still Available No outdoor seating From our family to your family, thank you! The Friday, Sept. 24, meeting will feature the U.S.’s most diminutive president, founding Father James Madison. Though he was only 5’4” tall and weighed a mere 100 pounds, Madison crafted the basic framework and guiding principles and is recognized as the of father of our Constitution. Did you know, if you have a Madison in your purse or wallet, it is a very rare $5,000 bill. Some are still in circulation; a bill in very good condition went for more than $100,000 at an auction in 2010. Constitution Week is rec- ognized Sept. 17 to 23. This observance was initiated in 1955 by DAR and signed into law in 1956. “There are two docu- ments of paramount im- portance to American history: the Declaration of Independence, which forged our national iden- tity, and the United States Constitution, which set forth the framework for the federal government that functions to this day,” said DAR President General Denise Doring VanBuren. “While Independence Day is a well-recognized and beloved national holiday, fewer people know about Constitution Week, an an- nual commemoration of the living document that upholds and protects the freedoms central to our American way of life.” The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Oregon Dunes Chapter meets monthly September through May. The DAR, with more than a million members, is a non-political, volunteer women’s service organiza- tion dedicated to keeping America strong by promot- ing patriotism, preserving history and supporting ed- ucation programs. The public is invited to attend and learn more about the fourth president of the U.S. To attend, con- tact Chapter Registrar Kar- en Childs at 541- 997-7154 for details.
