COM Florence Area Chamber of Commerce updates membership options S IUSLAW N EWS 2 S ECTIONS | 20 P AGES C OPYRIGHT 2021 The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce has evolved in recent years to become a regional cata- lyst, convener and champion of the community’s businesses. Chamber President/CEO Betti- na Hannigan reminds people that the Chamber is all about a strong business community that results in a strong economy to advance the causes of businesses, families, nonprofits and civic organizations that benefit the greater Florence area. “The better and stronger our businesses are, the better and stronger the community is,” she said. “And now it’s time that our membership levels reflect that too, and to reflect the important con- tributions our members make.” Hannigan and her board have changed membership levels from generic sounding names like Dis- tinguished Sponsor and Corporate Underwriter to reflect what these memberships really are. Nonprofits and non-business individuals, known as Associate Members at $125 per year, are now Community Supporters. Business Partners, at $225 per year, or $20 per month, are now more accurately known as Com- munity Partners. Premier Partners at $500 per year are now Commu- nity Influencers. Distinguished Sponsors are now Community Leaders, which is more reflective of their $2,500 investment, and what were known as Corporate Underwriters are now Communi- ty Champions. While some restaurants were closed, that didn’t stop visitors from heading down to Old Town for the Rods N Rhodies Show N Shine, where dozens of cars lined Bay Street and parts of Nopal, Maple and Laurel streets. “The vehicles on display were fan- tastic and gave everyone something to look at, from little Crosleys to a 40-foot converted Greyhound Bus. Story & Photos By Mark Brennan Siuslaw News The 20th anniversary of the ter- rorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, was commemorated locally with a memorial moment on Saturday morning. Emergency response vehicles and local first responders gathered at the corners of Bay and Maple streets in Historic Old Town for a ceremony and moment of silence. The event took place prior to the Rods N Rhodies Car Show and included members of Florence Police Department, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Res- cue, Western Lane Am- bulance Dis- trict and U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River. During the ceremony, senior representatives from all four groups rang the bell on the ladder truck to signify the four planes which were hijacked on Sept.11, 2001. “Realizing that our show this year was going to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the leadership of Rods N Rhodies Inc. wanted to be sure and include some type of ceremony to commemorate that event,” said or- ganizer Cal Applebee, a member of the committee. “We were extreme- ly pleased that police, EMTs, fire- fighters and our local Coast Guard all wanted to participate, as it made for a more meaningful moment as each one of them rang a bell for an incident associated with their service. It was truly amazing to ex- perience the way the crowd went completely silent for the event.” There was contingent of uni- formed first responders in atten- dance to honor the hundreds of emergency response workers who lost their lives trying to save indi- viduals trapped in the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center in New York City. A crowd also gathered to honor the memory of those lost, stand- ing amidst the American flags in- stalled by Kiwanis Club of Florence throughout town for Patriot Day. See MEMORIAL page 7A
