SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2021 | 7A F lorence’s annual treasure hunt begins all over the area on Friday, Sept. 10, and continues through Sunday, Sept. 12. The eighth annual Community- wide Garage Sale has dozens of locations throughout the city and surrounding communities, as well as business participants in Historic Old Town and the Antique District on Highway 101. All are listed in the directory map (see pages 3-4). There are treasures aplenty out there just waiting to be found! If you’re a seasoned garage-saler, 8th annual Community-wide Garage Sale you probably don’t need help. But if this is all new to you, here are a few hints to help make the day extra fun. 1. Pick an area or neighborhood to start in, then use a highlighter to help map out your “plan of attack.” You’ve got a lot of ground to cover — stay organized. 2. Pack some extra boxes, sacks and/or packing paper in your car. It’s always a big disappointment to get home with a fragile find and discover that it’s been broken in transport because it wasn’t careful- ly wrapped. 3. Bring plenty of change and small bills. You are going to need them! 4. Take snacks and beverages along to keep you fortified. This garage-sale stuff is serious business and takes a lot of energy. 5. Be friendly. Have fun. Don’t be afraid to negotiate, but haggle fairly. Keep it fun! Read inside for more tips on how to make the perfect find or even set up your sale. RETURN OF THE RODS Top hot rods, Communitywide Garage Sale return to Florence this weekend F lorence is revving-up for both the annual Rods N Rhodies Invitational Car Show and Benefit and the Communi- ty-wide Garage Sale. This year’s edition takes place primarily in and around Historic Old Town Florence on Saturday, Sept. 11. The Community-wide Garage Sale continues through Sunday, Sept. 12. “At Rods N Rhodies, you know you’ll see some of the West Coast’s most gorgeous, amazing, awe-inspiring hot rods all around town,” said or- ganizer Gary Cargill. “Up to 125 of the west coast’s best high-end hot rods, rat rods, and custom cruisers from 1976 and earlier will be in town. Some are worth up to a quarter-million dollars.” Though known primarily for the annual September event, Rods N Rhodies became its own local volunteer-led nonprofit in 2018 with a renewed vision to provide automotive assistance to locals in need. This year’s event will be a benefit for their mission and goals. “It’s a high-octane weekend at a spectacular time of year here in Florence,” said Florence Area Chamber of Commerce Pres- ident/CEO Bettina Hannigan. “We can’t know for sure right now what the COVID-19 regu- lations are going to be, but we expect all visitors and locals to abide by the Oregon Health Au- thority’s guidelines in effect at the time, and to bring their pa- tience and good manners when attending, dining or shopping.” Rods N Rhodies’ main event takes place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Bay Street. The event also includes a clas- sic Saturday night cruise in and around Old Town, a poker walk and raffles with lots of prizes and awards for the exhibitors. Music from the 1950s to the ’70s will be provided all week- end by Russ Strohmeyer, a pop- ular DJ on the car show circuit. “He’s a master, a car enthusi- ast, and his DJ equipment is to die for,” said Cargill. Bargain hunters can pick up a guide to the Community-wide Garage Sale at FlorenceCham- ber.com. People can then cruise the bargain trail all weekend to stop by dozens of commercial and private sales all over town. On Saturday, Bay Street will be blocked to regular traffic be- ginning at 7 a.m. for exhibitors to enter at the west end at King- wood. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. cars will be on display along both sides of the street, there will be themed music, and raffle tick- ets for sale with a different win- Florence Area September - , 20 Multi Family Sat. 9/11 9am-3pm 5865 Mercer Creek DR Park on Street Guy stuff, Baby/Toddler items, decor, signs, wood, cloth diapers, rugs and more. 2 Fri.9/10 & Sat. 9/11 9am-3pm 88539 Collard Loop We have something for everyone. 3 Fri.9/10 , Sat.9/11, Sun. 9/12 8am-3pm & Sun. 8am-12pm 87905 Hwy 101 Fri.9/10 & Sat, 9/11 4777 Rhododendron Lp. You’ll be on your feet all day, including time spent on grass and dirt. 2 Map your route to make the best use of your time. Stopping at sites with multiple vendors gives you more shopping time and requires less driving time. 3 Wear sunscreen or a hat or both, and try to keep your face in the shade. 4 Bring water and snacks. 5 Have a tape measure handy to make sure large purchases such as furniture will fi t inside your house. 6 Hit the ATM for cash before you head out; most vendors don’t take credit cards. 7 Take along a rolling tote to hold your purchases. This minimizes the amount of weight you have to carry and keeps your hands free to keep shopping. 8 Pack hand sanitizer. If you’re shopping at a large venue, the only restrooms might be portable ones, which don’t include sinks for proper hand-washing. 9 Think ahead on shipping. If you buy something big, will you send it from an over- night shipping service or bus service, or will you need to rent a truck or trailer? 10 If you see something you like, buy it, because when you come back later it will probably be gone. At 4:15 p.m., immediately following the awards presen- tation, cruisers will begin the annual classic car cruise in and around Historic Old Town. “The cruise is one of the public’s and exhibitors’ favor- ite events during the weekend,” said Cargill. “Low and slow is the goal.” Get involved with Rods N Rhodies by contacting Cargill at 541-999-6513 or florencerodsnrhodies@gmail. com. Visitors are invited to vote for the Peoples’ Choice by obtaining a ballot in Old Town and returning it by 3 p.m. According to Cargill, “Rod” and “Rhody” — retired teach- ers in blue and pink overalls like mechanics wore back in the day — will help kids with a special ballot for the Children’s Choice Award. Kids who vote receive a small goodie bag. “The couple will also inform the public about the Rods N Rhodies, Inc.’s Transportation Solutions Project, which as- sists local families in need with transportation solutions,” Car- Fri. 9/10 & Sat. 9/11 9am – 3pm 1601 Rhododendron Dr. #641 No early birds.
