SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2021 | 3A Community News Rods N Rhodies opens today with Sept. 11 memorial On Saturday, Sept. 11, the Rods N Rhodies Car Show will begin with a memorial moment for the 20th anniversary of the ter- rorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The community is invit- ed to join the event at 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Bay and Maple streets in Historic Old Town Flor- ence. The event will include Florence Police Depart- ment, Siuslaw Valley Fire and rescue, U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw Riv- er, Western Lane Ambu- lance District and area vet- eran and patriotic groups. At 8:40 a.m., weekend announcer Russ Stohmey- er will begin the event with opening comments. He will also lead attendees in a brief remembrance cer- emony to recognize those Americans who lost their lives 20 years ago in the 9/11 attacks on the USA. There will be four repre- sentatives to ring the bell once, each to commemo- rate the times the attacks took place; followed by a moment of silence. In addition, the Nation- al Anthem will play, along with “God Bless the USA.” At the conclusion, Rods N Rhodies will begin. Helping Hands Coalition Crossing borders to Florence Community members open their homes to international students By Reina Harwood Siuslaw News For more than 35 years, the In- ternational Student Exchange (ISE) program has prioritized growth and development amongst high school students from around the globe. In the current 2021-22 academ- ic year, a total of 92 out of 2,400 students from overseas have been placed in Oregon to live with host families and attend public and pri- vate institutions. Historically, ISE has sponsored nearly 3,000 students each year. The event was cancelled due to COVID related con- cerns, but the city still want- ed to distribute the food items purchased for the celebration. Holding it at Miller Park allowed people to spread out, wear masks and still get together for an end-of-summer bash. According to Messmer, city staff were able to dis- tribute more than 400 ham- burgers and 300 hot dogs, as well as over 500 servings of BJ’s ice cream. “We were happy to see so many students, families and community members come get a free dinner and enjoy the evening after a busy first day of school,” Messmer said.
