RULES from page 1B
just as the records of
pitchers differ from each
league.
When Lew Alcindor
was at UCLA, the NCAA
rules committee decided
to ban the dunking of the
basketball. Alcindor had
to alter his offensive ap-
proach to scoring. While
this rule was in effect for
only a short time, Alcin-
dor credited this rule with
his development of the
sky hook, a shot so effec-
tive it dominated the NBA
for over two decades. The
three-point line came into
the NBA to unclog the
middle of the court.
When the first Warren-
ton High School roll of
top basketball scorers was
released, I was in the top
15 all-time. When I was
inducted into the WHS
Hall of Fame, I said in my
speech that if the three-
point shot was available in
my playing days I might
have been in the top 10.
Several rules have been
changed for the safety of
players in the NFL. The
one constant is the four
downs to make a first
down. Even though NFL
players have become huge
individuals, the field di-
mensions and first down
yardage are still the same.
The game of football
may continue to modify
rules for player safety, but
the game is still my favor-
ite. Very few sports allow
you to legally hit someone
as hard as you can and not
get into trouble.
Sports play an import-
ant role in the world to-
day. Millions of individu-
als end their work/school
day only to go out and
play. Whether you go to
your own backyard or to
a team practice, it keeps
you active and involved.
There are many oppor-
tunities and activities in
Florence and Mapleton.
Find out where they are
and join in the action.
