Students involved in the summer school program for first- to sixth-grad- ers at Siuslaw Elementary School built a city from “heart and soul,” which they complet- ed July 22. In a summer program creat- ed around civics, students used creativity, art supplies and card- board to build an entire imag- inary city in the school gym. This included a bank, theater, gallery, observatory, fire station, animal shelter, market, library, gym and garden. Students were able to show their families their completed creations after the closing cer- emony, presented outside at the elementary school. Family and friends of the new volunteers were on hand for the ceremony. Gharib is an employee of WLAD and has completed the necessary training to qualify as a volunteer for SVFR. “We have several fire- fighters who work for WLAD on a part time basis and Ali is our first para- medic to become a SVFR volunteer firefighter,” said Operations Chief Matt House. Following this, WLFEA Administrative Manager Dina McClure gave a brief financial presentation. “I always like getting to this time of the year. We get to do June financials and the end of the fiscal year, and I can report that every- thing looks really good,” she said. “Income was close and over budget and expenses were under or below bud- get, which is exactly what we want.” She added that she has a team who work with her on the financials of the dis- tricts. wore matching shirts with an illustration by Kassy Keppol, showing the this year’s theme, “We Built This City on Heart and Soul.” In addition, new Siuslaw High School Principal — and former elementary principal — Mike Harklerode gave a brief welcome to the event. During his introduction, he introduced Amy Flora as the elementary school’s new principal. “She’s going to be awesome. You guys are in good hands,” Harklerode said. “For those of you coming back to Siuslaw El- ementary School, you’ve got it made. Ms. Flora is going to do a great job.” The closing ceremony also in- cluded Girl Scout Troop 11752, led by Lisa Spencer, which pre- sented flags at the start of the ceremony, and district adminis- tration and board members. There were no questions to McClure from any direc- tors and the financial report was accepted as presented. The majority of the re- mainder of the meeting was allotted to a presenta- tion from the Turell Group, responding to a request from WLFEA to submit a proposal for managing the public outreach for an up- coming November levy re- quest, which WLFEA has decided to ask the commu- nity to continue. The current levy of 45 cents per thousand dollars of assessed property value is set to expire at the end of the year. “Helping WLFEA suc- cessfully secure a ‘yes’ vote in the upcoming option levy renewal while also set- ting the stage for a merge of your programs in the near future is an objective we are excited to help you achieve,” said Dana Turell in her presentation. “Re- taining funding for your highly skilled firefighters and EMS providers is crit- ical to the health and safe- ty of the Florence area. As community members of Lane County with deep ties to the Florence area, we un- derstand how critical this vote is. The need for a concise and up to date public out- reach plan was made by Heppel. “There was a lot I didn’t know about the services I receive here in Florence, and it was just accepted. I think this is a good op- portunity for us to tell the community what we do and how we do it,” she said. “Be- cause some do not under- stand, and I think it is really important that we focus on that marketing.” Over the past years, dis- cussions of a merger be- tween WLAD and SVFR have brought up divergent views of what level of inte- gration would be best for the public. That discussion will con- tinue, but at the urging of Webb, the WLAD Board approved a November date for the levy request and a continuation of the current rate of taxation. In his chief ’s report, Schick included personnel updates and a reminder that both districts will be participating in a public event early next month. “SVFR and WLAD will once again be participating in the National Night Out event scheduled for Tues- day, Aug. 3. The rumor is that there will be a dunk tank where you can attempt to sink police or fire/EMS operation chiefs,” he said. Schick also updated the directors on the Oregon wildfire situation, where district members have joined fire fighters from around Oregon and else- where. The Bootleg Fire remains one of the nation’s largest wildfires and has consumed 410,000 acres. “SVFR sent two firefight- ers, Tony Miller and Blair Campbell, as part of a task force from Lane County to the Bootleg Fire in south- ern Oregon. They will likely be on scene for two weeks, at which point we will ro- tate them with other SVFR firefighters. They have been mostly performing struc- ture protection,” Schick said. On July 24, the SVFR Facebook page reported that Miller and Campbell had returned to the area af- ter 14 days. “We are very proud of the work the two of you did on the Bootleg Fire while tasked on the conflagra- tion,” the post stated. Schick also reported the Elbow Creek Fire, a major fire in northeast Oregon. However, “Due to the po- tential for a fire in Lane County we have decided to limit the number of re- sources we can commit to out of the area conflagra- tions.” Director reports were limited, and the meeting was adjourned.
