C&M provides a stable business
Trail and beach rides
connect visitors to
horses, nature

People and places come and go, but one con-
stant in Florence for the past 40 years has been
Jeff Chastain’s C&M Stables, named so for the
coastal mountains the stables call home.
Chastain, who was born and raised in Flor-
ence, started his business is 1981 and never
looked back.
“I bought a horse, and it was expensive, and I
had to find a way to pay for it,” he said. “That’s
how it was born. Over the years, I just kept add-
ing and adding.”
In addition to tours of the local dunes and
beaches, C&M Stables also offers boarding for
horses. The company’s main focus — and what
they are understandably famous for — are their
guided rides on the central coast.
According to Chastain, C&M’s tours have re-
mained as popular now as they were when the
company began.
“It really hasn’t changed,” he said. “Over the
past 40 years, horseback riding is the same out-
door recreation activity that people have always
been enthusiastic about, from little kids right on
up to adults.”
The stables were affected by the pandemic like
others in the area; however, as soon as they were
allowed to reopen, business did not slow.
“We were closed for the original two-month
closure, and when we opened back up, we were
busy,” said Chastain. “There wasn’t a lot going
on, so anything that was opening up outdoors
where people could get out and around, that’s
what they were doing. We had a very busy year
last year, and winter stayed fair.”
Because it was one of the only things people
could do for fun at the time, Chastain noted that
it was a difficult period of time.
“Last summer there were fights on this deck
[out front],” he said, “and I’d have to step out and
tell people it doesn’t matter who comes through
the door in what order, you’re all on the same
ride. ‘You’re all going to come through and get
processed, and we’re going to have a ride where
you’re going to enjoy and relax, so take a deep
breath and we’ll get up there.’ But I haven’t seen

TCC to donate 140,000 backpacks full of
school supplies to children on Aug. 1
On Sunday, Aug. 1, nearly 750
TCC and Wireless Zone stores
nationwide are teaming up to
donate more than 140,000 back-
packs full of school supplies to
children through TCC’s ninth
annual School Rocks Backpack
Giveaway. Since the beginning
of the event in 2013, TCC has
donated 1.2 million backpacks to
children across the U.S., helping
to ease the burden of back-to-
school shopping for families.
Between 1-4 p.m. on Aug. 1,
the TCC Florence store, 2775
Highway 101 Suite D, is inviting
local families to pick up back-
packs filled with pencils, paper,
a pencil box, folders, glue and
more for their children.
Each TCC store will donate up
to 150 backpacks on a first-come,
first-served basis.
One backpack per child pres-
ent will be given away on a first-
come, first-served basis while
supplies last. Each store location
will adhere to local and CDC
guidelines to provide a safe envi-
ronment for event attendees and
TCC employees.
“The start of the school year
is an exciting time, and we are
thrilled to support the education
of the youth in our communi-
ties through our School Rocks
Backpack Giveaway,” said Scott
Moorehead, CEO of Round
Room, parent company of TCC.
“By providing families across the
country with essential school
supplies, we’re easing the back-
to-school shopping burden and
helping set children up for suc-
cess.”
Round Room LLC is the na-
tion’s largest Verizon authorized
retailer. It has worked since 2013
to ensure children are well pre-
pared for the start of the school
year. TCC will also award three
students each $10,000 college
scholarships.
According to the National Re-
tail Federation, American fam-
ilies with school-aged children
spent an average of $789.49 on
school supplies in 2020 — total-
ing $33.9 billion spent in America
last year on school supplies alone.
TCC is working to ease the strain
of rising school supplies costs
through its annual program.
Each participating TCC store
will donate up to 150 backpacks
with all leftovers being donated
to local schools.
TCC is a Culture of Good, Inc.
company and makes ongoing in-
vestments in the local communi-
ties where it operates. Recently,
the company donated $50,000
to in-person children’s summer
camps as part of its annual Kids
Rock program.
Additionally in 2021, TCC
donated more than 500 appre-
ciation boxes to schools nation-
wide honoring teachers juggling
education hurdles caused by the
coronavirus pandemic. The com-
pany’s nonprofit organization,
TCC Gives, recently surpassed
$2.5 million in donations to local
nonprofits across the country as
well.

I hope you’re all enjoying the wonderful summer so far. It’s a tad windy but so much better than being
in 90 plus degree weather. Since so many people are retreating to the coast, it’s been very busy. It’s really
good news for retailers and restaurants. I have to admit, though, when I tried to go out to eat a number
