As always, fireworks are
prohibited everywhere on
the forest. The penalty for
possessing fireworks can be
as high as $5,000, imprison-
ment for up to six months, or
both.
If using a campfire in a
campground, visitors are re-
minded to:
• Keep campfires small
and within the metal or con-
crete fire enclosure provided
at campsites and picnic areas.
• Only burn materials that
fit within the campfire ring
and do not burn trash.
• Watch out for vegetation
or limbs that may overhang
the fire ring.
• Fully extinguish all
campfires before leaving —
even if gone for a short pe-
riod of time. Use the back
of your hand over gray coals
and ash to determine if fire is
still warm. Douse with water
if heat remains.

SWC also needs the help
of all members to update
its bylaws, a process that it
began in January. At the Jan-
uary Community Meeting,
SWC introduced proposed
changes to its bylaws; mem-
bers at that meeting will re-
call voting to adopt them.
However, thanks to subse-
quent member feedback,
SWC determined that vote
was not binding, since it had
not fulfilled an obligation to
post draft bylaws changes
for a 30-day review period
prior to voting.
The draft bylaws have
now been posted on SWC’s
website since June 27.
SWC members will be
voting to adopt the pro-
posed bylaws at the July
28 meeting, completing an
important update to SWC’s
governing rules.
SWC staff value the com-
munity’s participation in
this process, and hopes that
people plan to attend the
July meeting.
All members are eligible
to vote on the bylaws. Please
make sure that you have
paid your 2021 dues prior
to the July 28 meeting, as
voting requirements in the
current bylaws require pay-
ment in order to be consid-
ered a current member and
for your vote to be counted.
If you have questions
about your membership
status, email Mizu Burruss
at coordinator@siuslaw.org
or Christina Ward at finan-
cial@siuslaw.org, or call

The July 28 meeting will
be hosted via Zoom, and is
free to attend. Registration is

ing. Millions of individuals
will be watching these ath-

goal of an Olympic Gold
Medal. When we sit and
watch, and I will be watch-

judge an athletes’ decision
to make their dreams come
true? We can’t.
The thrill of victory or
the agony of defeat of the

Games lives on today as
much as it did back then. So
let the games begin. We can
hope the decision does not
bring about a continued
and increased Covid crisis.
It might have been a better
decision to postpone the
games again, but Japan put
monetary decisions above
the health and wellbeing of
its citizens and the citizens
of the world.
