Friends of Florence seeks volunteer drivers The Friends of Flor- ence is seeking drivers to transport cancer patients who are receiving radia- tion treatment to Eugene or Springfield on a daily basis. For over 34 years the Friends of Florence, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, has transported patients roundtrip from Florence to the Willamette Valley Cancer Institute and to the Oregon Urology Institute. The bus leaves from Peace Harbor Hospital and, when requested, has pick- up locations in Mapleton and Veneta. A driver’s shift requires approximately five hours, from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Volunteers typically drive once per month. The Friends’ bus is a 14-passenger vehicle and the trip to the Eugene area is about 160 miles round trip. “It’s about the same size as a small RV,” said Bart Mealer, Friends of Flor- ence Board President. A commercial driver’s license is not required. “Riding the bus also of- fers companionship for patients who are mak- ing this trip every day. It shows them that they’re not alone,” said Mealer. “It’s a traveling support group.” Individuals interested in helping transport patients should call Mealer at 541- 991-8044. The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is in desperate need of volunteer drivers who are willing to drive veterans, in the DAV van, to Portland for medical appointments . The drive is about four hours to Port- land, four hours for the return trip, plus four hours waiting for vets at the hospital. This is a total of about 330 miles and 12 hours.
