Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Book Review “Plain Bad Heroines” by Emily M. Danforth The award-winning au- thor of “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” makes her adult debut with this highly imaginative and original hor- ror-comedy centered around a cursed New England boarding school for girls — a wickedly whimsical celebration of the art of storytelling, Sapphic love, and the rebellious female spirit. The book begins in 1902, at the Brookhants School for Girls. Flo and Clara, two im- pressionable students, are obsessed with each other and with a daring young writer named Mary MacLane, the author of a scandalous best- selling memoir. To show their devotion to Mary, the girls es- tablish their own private club and call it the Plain Bad Her- oine Society. They meet in se- cret in a nearby apple orchard, the setting of their wildest happiness and, ultimately, of their macabre deaths. This is where their bodies are lat- er discovered with a copy of Mary’s book splayed beside them, the victims of a swarm of stinging, angry yellow jack- ets. Less than five years later, the Brookhants School for Girls closes its doors forever — but not before three more people mysteriously die on the property, each in a most Expanded Hours and Services This Week Beginning this week, the library is offering expanded browsing hours, increasing the open hours on Wednes- days and Thursdays. So cur- rently open browsing hours are now Monday and Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Wednes- day through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. We are offering three com- puter appointments, plus space for one walk-in, twice a day at 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. We also have an express, 10-minute limit, print station, for those who need just a few minutes to print something. The library also now has one study room available for reservation. One individual or a family group of up to four people are allowed, with reser- vations limited at 2-hours per day. As COVID restrictions ease in the state of Oregon and new staff are hired and trained, continue to look for addition- al services available at the li- brary!
