defense across the entire
court for the entire 32 min-
utes of the game, and that is
what we did,” said
Perry. “Our defense created
offensive opportunities for
our guys to score. It is
always great when a game
plan plays out how we
envision it to.”
Although the Falcons
were the first on the score
board, Siuslaw finished the
quarter ahead 13-11. And
while the first quarter was
close throughout, the Viks
were leading by 10 points
halfway through the second
quarter and finished the
half ahead 34-21.
Senior Skyler Loomis, a
guard for the Vikings said,
“I thought we had a good
first half and a great second
half. I was impressed by
the intensity we had going
into the third quarter
because in previous games,
we’ve come out of halftime
slower.”
They continued to
increase the lead in the sec-
ond half, finishing the third
quarter ahead 54-27.
Another significant addi-
tion to Siuslaw’s overall
score was the frequency
with which three-pointers
kept falling in their favor.
“My favorite moment
from the game would be
Tyrone (Krohn) making a
three-pointer from the cor-
ner,” Loomis said.
In addition to Krohn,
Brody Terry picked up 1,
Izacc Mattson had 2, and
Liam McClellan was on
fire with 4 total three-point-
ers that evening. The Viks
won by 25 points, 24 of
which came from behind
the three-point line.
“Everyone on our roster
got significant minutes and
contributed to the win,”
said Perry.
Loomis added, “I was
happy with how everybody
played, and it was good to
see everybody getting time
on the court.”
It truly was a full team
contribution
for
the
Vikings, with almost every-
one on the roster putting up
points on the score board.
“I was very happy for
the guys on our team to
come out and execute the
way they did,” said Perry.
“They understand when we
do the things that we need
to do, it doesn’t matter
what the other team does.
We have steadily improved
throughout the season, and
that is what you want as a
coach.”
The Vikings played at
Junction City on Tuesday,
June 15, with scores com-
ing in after printing dead-
lines. Their final scheduled
games for this season are at
home on Thursday, June
17, against Cottage Grove
at 7:15 p.m. and Friday,
June 18, against Bandon at
3 p.m., which will also be
their Senior Night.
against Banks, who won
57-23, and again 7 out of
10 wins came by forfeit.
“Estacada outwrestled
us, Tillamook outwrestled
us, but Banks, I think we
outwrestled them in our
matches,” said Wartnik.
“But it wasn’t a big mar-
gin, it was so close.
Matches that we lost, we
wrestled well, and matches
that we won, they wrestled
well; we were having real-
ly hotly contested match-
ups.
“And that’s what you
want,” he added. “If you
just slaughter your oppo-
nent, you don’t learn much,
you don’t grow. And like-
wise, if you get slaugh-
tered, you learn that you
need to work harder. You
may realize that you’ve got
a weak spot, but you just
have to take those hard
matches to the lab and go
to work.”
The Viks had 2 wins
against Banks, with De La
Mora defeating Mason
Warren by technical fall
16-1 and LaCosse pinning
Luke Bozied in 2:38.
“Mason and Elijah both
did really well,” said
Wartnik. “Each won two
matches, and each last one,
but even when they lost,
they were competing very
well. Yoskar de la Mora
won two matches; he had a
good day. And again, we’re
talking about teams in the
top 10, and probably two
of them in the top five in
the state. So, to get some
wins against the top-grade
teams is pretty cool.”
At this point, the Vikings
are preparing for regional
tournaments on the boys’
and girls’ sides. Several of
the wrestlers will be com-
peting for the final time in
their careers for the Viks.
“Elijah
LaCosse,
Christian Newlan, Ryan
Jennings and Michael
Schick, these next few
weeks are the end of their
journey with this wrestling
team,” said Wartnik.
Mason Buss celebrates a victory after pinning his
opponent.
“They’re going to have
lives beyond, and we’re
glad for them that they’re
graduating, so we’re going
to do the best we can to
prepare them for regionals
and state as they make their
last go-around.”
Although it has felt like
an extraordinarily short
season, Wartnik has uti-
lized it to its fullest and is
preparing his younger team
members for the future.
“So much of our vision
right now is preparation for
next year,” he said. “What
we’ve been doing this year
is trying to plant a seed of
vision in the minds of our
underclassmen. If they’re
willing to work hard over
the summer and next year,
if they invest, they can
compete well against the
very best teams in the state.
We’ll see how they respond
to that opportunity.”
The Vikings have the
boys’ regional tournament
at Sweet Home on
Thursday, June 17, begin-
ning at 10 a.m., and the
girls’ regional is at
Thurston on Friday, June
18, beginning at 10 a.m.
The top four finishers from
each tournament will go to
the state competitions
being held June 24-26.
