Tuesday was particularly difficult for the Viks as they were missing two of their starters to begin the game. “I thought the guys we had available for the game played super hard and did exactly what was asked of them,” said Coach Dylan Perry. “Guys had the opportunity for addition- al minutes they normally don’t get, and they proved why they deserve to play more on our varsity team.” The team fought hard, but unfortunately it wasn’t translating to the score board. “We played good defense throughout the game, but we just struggled to score the bas- ketball, which has been a problem for us at times this year,” said Perry. He continued, “We were down two starters to begin the game, and then we also lost Avery Hart early in the third quarter. We thought that it might be a significant knee injury, but luckily it turned out to be not quite as bad. Avery is done for the season, but he showed tremendous growth during his junior year, and I expect him to be an all-league player for us next season as a senior. There aren’t many guys in the state, let alone in our league, that can guard him.” Then, on Thursday, the Viks returned home to see a rematch with the Falcons. “Our game plan was to apply our pressure See VIKINGS page 2B Skyler Mattson drives to the hoop for a layup. We still have we have six kids on quar- antine, but that’s the way it is. The kids that went did a great job, and we were wrestling against some of the highest caliber teams in the state,” said Coach Neil Wartnik of his team’s performance at the Philomath Dual meet last Thursday, June 10. The Viks wrestled against Tillamook, Estacada and Banks, tak- ing wins in each dual, but as a team, Siuslaw fell to all three schools. “The reason that I went after this competition is I knew it would really challenge us,” said Wartnik. “It would show us where we are and, in some cases, it would motivate us and allow us to see some of the gaps that we need to fill to improve our top wrestlers’ chances of doing well at regionals and state. “You can’t get better unless you wrestle the best because that’s where your weaknesses are exposed. That’s where you realize where you are in relation to the head of the pack.” Siuslaw took on Tillamook first, who won 60-12, but 7 out of 10 of the Cheesemakers’ wins came by forfeit. In the 3 matches the Vikings won, Ryan Jennings defeated Gilbert Whitlatch by decision 13-6, Mason Jennings pinned Hayden Hamerl in 1:10 and Yoskar De La Mora won his match against Baird Hagerty by sudden victory 4-2. The dual worked out similarly for Estacada, who won 55-18, but this time 6 of 10 wins for the Rangers came by forfeit. Siuslaw had 2 wins against Estacada: Elijah LaCosse pinned Caleb McDonald in 5:48, and Buss had a second win for the night, pinning Mark Youngberg in 1:14. Siuslaw’s final dual meet was See WRESTLING page 2B Lady Vikings fall to Pirates, defeat Falcons By Zeahna Young Siuslaw News Last week, Siuslaw’s girls’ basketball team played two games, travel- ing to Marshfield on Tuesday, June 8, and fall- ing to the Pirates 25-46, but returning home on Thursday, June 10, to play Elmira for a rematch. They defeated the Falcons sound- ly 46-14 in their highest scoring game of the season. “Our defense was really good on Tuesday, and we knew we had to keep that up,” said Coach Ashlee Cole. “Going into the day, we knew we were a better team and the last time we played them, it should have been a bigger deficit. So, we knew we couldn’t drop down to their level, which I think we did a really good job of in this game. We played our own game, and we just put the pressure to them.” The girls came out with everything they had from the get-go, wasting no time getting out in front of the Falcons early on. “Before the game they wrote on the board, ‘high intensity,’ so that was one of the main keys that they were looking for today,” said Cole. “And they defi- nitely brought it. That was the second time we ran that press, and tonight, it looked like we ran it for three years. We knew we could beat them with it, so we figured, why not?
