The county’s website re- ported about a 25 percent voter turnout rate this season, with 69,655 ballots cast out of 272,158 registered voters in the county. Western Lane County fea- tured primarily uncontested elections, for special district boards including Mapleton Fire Department, Mapleton School District #32, Mapleton Water District, Port of Siuslaw, Siuslaw Public Library Dis- trict, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue, Swisshome-Dead- wood RFPD and Western Lane Ambulance District. The contested races includ- ed Siuslaw School District #97J, Lane Community Col- lege and Lane Education Ser- vice District. The election showed that voters overwhelmingly en- dorsed the passing of Measure 20-319, which supports 4-H and Oregon State University Extension programs in Lane County. The measure will continue and expand services by implementing a local op- tion tax of 2.8 cents per $1,000 of assessed land value for five years. For example, a property assessed at $200,000 would be charged $5.60 per year. Yes, the Florence Festival of Books (FFOB) will be happening from Sept. 17 to 18 at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St, one week earlier than it normally takes place. This popular event cele- brates its 10th anniversary with an impressive line up of speakers on Friday. All festi- val activities are open to the public and are free. Popular and great- ly admired Oregon authors Bob Welch and William Sulli- van provide the star power for the Fri- day afternoon panel discussion held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. And that evening, Keynote Speaker Melody Carlson takes the stage at 7 p.m. She is one of America’s most prolific and beloved romance authors, with more than 250 books to her cred- it and more than one Hall- mark Channel movie. All three will be at the book fair the next day. The book fair takes place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Satur- day and is open to partici- pation by authors and pub- lishers. This year, applications will be accessible online beginning July 12, a month later than normal. For the public, this is an opportunity to speak with the authors who wrote the books. Expect to see many genres during the event: fic- tion, non-fiction, children’s books, history, mystery, fan- tasy, romance, memoir. And for wannabe authors, it’s a chance to pitch your idea or show your manuscript to a publisher. The FFOB will be the same enjoyable event, al- though accommodations may have to be made due to the pandemic.
