2A | SATURDAY, JUNE 12 2021 | SIUSLAW NEWS On The Record OBITUARY ROBINSON—William “Bill” G. Robinson passed away on May 3 0 , 2021. Born in Galt, Ontar- io, on D e c . Bill Robinson 3 1 , 1941, to Grieve and Isabelle Rob- inson, he was 79 years old. Bill spent his childhood summers in Wasaga Beach, Ontario, and followed his love of golf and hockey. He later attended Penn State, where he apprenticed two summers for Robert Trent Jones and earned a degree in landscape architecture in 1964. He met and married Joyce Hopkins and moved to Amherst, Mass., in the fall of 1964 to work alongside Geoffrey Cornish as a golf course architect. He and Joyce had three children and shared many happy memories, as well as enjoying summers on Cape Cod. Bill founded the Amherst Hockey Association, which is still active today, and he and Cornish designed their first golf course together in Amherst, the Hickory Ridge Golf Club, which he co- owned as well. He and Cor- nish were partners for 16 years and formed Cornish and Robinson Golf Course Architects until 1980. Later, Bill met and mar- ried Cyndie Jennings and moved to Bellingham, Wash., and then Florence, Ore., while designing golf courses with his brother John. Bill retired in 2005 after 45 years in the business and collectively worked on close to 300 golf course ren- ovations and designed 120 new courses. His career favorite golf course renovation was Banff Springs Golf Course in Banff, Alberta, add- ing the third nine holes to the course. His career fa- vorite golf course designs were Gallagher’s Canyon in Kelowna, BC, which is rated one of the best golf courses in Canada; Eagle Ranch in Invermere, BC; and Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club in Alberta, BC. Bill’s name is on golf courses throughout New England and in western Canada, and many places in between. He moved to Flor- ence in 1984 and in 1989 with a partner, bought the run-down nine-hole Rhodo Dunes golf course, built an additional nine holes and re-designed the old nine, renaming it Ocean Dunes Golf Links. After his wife’s passing, Bill married Della Weston in 2003, a local Florence home designer and devel- oper. They shared 17 loving and happy years togeth- er living on Cape Cod, in Pinehurst, North Caroli- na, and eventually back to Florence. One of the champion- ships in Oregon was won at the age of 61, which is quite an accomplishment and trib- ute to his game of golf. He loved golf, hockey, classic cars, fishing, boat- ing, and ZZ Top. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Della; daugh- ter Kelly; son David and daughter-in-law Suzanne; son Jeffrey and daughter-in- law Kate; his brother John and sister-in-law Marjorie and nephew Michael; step- son Brian Jennings and his wife Ruth; and step-son Brent Jennings. He is also survived by eight grandchil- dren: Hana, Grace, Kera, Mei Li, JR, Brian Jr., Nicho- las, and Lauren.
