After registration at Siuslaw Middle School, the racers got into the fun by throwing colorful powder at each other and onlook- ers. For event organizer Crystal Osburn, the Color-A-Thon will “help blast off the colorful summer we’re all going to have!” Through sponsorships and registrations, the event raised more than $15,000 for the school district. Florence Mayor Joe Henry attended, along with Florence Police Department, the Commu- nity Emergency Response Team, school staff and members of the Florence Community PTA, as well as families and community members who enjoyed getting into the spirit of the day. See LOW RISK page 5A Florence approves 2021-23 biennium budget Council ends COVID state of emergency By Mark Brennan Siuslaw News The Florence City Council was busy on Monday, June 7, with a scheduled council work session at 10:30, an executive session at 4 p.m. and a public hearing in con- junction with a city council meet- ing at 5:30 p.m. Big topics for the day included reopening city facili- ties, the 2021-23 biennium budget, city business and the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce. The morning work session was primarily held at the request of City Manager Erin Reynolds, who wanted to communicate and coor- dinate with council members the plan for the expected reopening of city offices and public meetings. Reynolds reviewed the timeline and the changes in COVID-19 protocols since the initial onset of the pandemic before focusing on the need to consider extending the Emergency Declaration which the city has been operating under and which was due to expire on Tues- day, June 8. “The emergency declaration that is in effect right now is your fourth extension. … As promised at your April council meeting on April 5, we want to have a discussion and make sure we receive feedback from you, as a council, before considering another extension or letting it expire, or talking about what’s next for the city,” Reynolds said. She talked about Oregon Gov. Brown’s May 11 announcement that the state would terminate the county risk level framework once 70 percent of Oregon residents aged 18 and over were vaccinated against COVID-19. “As a workplace in Oregon, we are beholding to OSHA, and OSHA has specific rules in place,” Reyn- olds said. “We are following those rules right now and we plan on fol- lowing the risk framework as long as those rules are in effect.” See CITY page 6A RECORDS Obituaries & response logs Inside — A2 TV GUIDE Inside — B3-B4 KIDS CORNER Activities for kids Inside — B5 CLASSIFIEDS Listings & notices Inside — B6 follow uS for the lateSt NewS : /S iuSlaw N ewS @S iuSlaw N ewS T he S iuSlaw N ewS . com Golf tournament helps BGC drive toward summer By Mark Brennan Siuslaw News S iuSlaw N ewS 2 S ectioNS | 16 P ageS c oPyright 2021 The Boys and Girls Clubs (BGC) of Western Lane County held its 24th annual Fore! Kids Golf Tour- nament on June 5 at Florence Golf Links. Thirty-six teams participated in the fundraising event, which pro- vides revenue for summer programs offered by the club. Pat Bennett and Nancy Pearson were co-chairs of the tournament and Interim Chief Executive Officer Chuck Trent was also on hand to co- ordinate the many moving parts of the day-long event. Activities included an 18-hole scramble start, best ball round of golf, a putting contest, dice roll and the famous helicopter golf ball drop, all of which came with prizes donat- ed by event sponsors. “Today, 144 golfers, over 30 spon- sors and many volunteers showed up to ensure every youth in Florence has the opportunity for a great fu- ture,” Trent said. “Our club is small, MARK BRENNAN/SIUSLAW NEWS Golfers in the Boys and Girls Club’s 24th Fore! The first few weeks of registration were very slow. The board decided we would have a first-class tourna- ment no matter how many teams participated in the event. This is all about the kids, and we owe it to them to give them our best. And then the magic happened. Team registrations and sponsorships started flowing in and kept coming in right up to the day of the event,” stated Trent. Among the dozens of businesses and individuals which sponsored the event were Chad Clements, Fair- way Estates and R&R King Logging, who together provided prizes and funding for the most exciting event of the day, the helicopter ball drop, and Banner Bank, which was the overall event sponsor.
