SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 2021 | 5A to decline. “But, COVID-19 re- mains a serious threat to unvaccinated individuals and communities with low vaccination rates. If you have been waiting to get vaccinated, go get your shot today. It’s never been easier to get vaccinated, and you may just win $1 million through the Take Your Shot, Oregon cam- paign.” On May 11, Governor Brown announced that counties that vaccinate LEVEL from page 1A which reaches moderate risk of community spread of COVID-19. “The science is clear: vaccines are very effec- tive in keeping people safe from COVID-19, and they are the key to returning to normal life and lift- ing health and safety re- strictions statewide,” said Brown. “Thanks to all the Oregonians who have been vaccinated so far, Oregon’s case rates have continued at least 65% of their adult residents with at least one dose and submit documen- tation on how they will close equity gaps in their vaccination efforts are eli- gible to move to the Lower Risk level. As of Tuesday, a total of 2,863 prime doses need to be administered in Lane County to achieve 65 per- cent Lane County Public Health reported. People should note that the dashboard displays state vaccine allocations only, and does not track federally administered vac- cine doses. While additional coun- ties submitted equity plans this week, none of those counties achieved the 65% threshold needed to move to Lower Risk this week. As case rates continue to decline, county risk level changes will be announced every week. Counties can move to lower risk levels based either on vaccination rates and the submission of an equity plan, or declin- ing case rates and positiv- ity rates. The next risk level changes will be announced on Tuesday, June 8, to take effect on Friday, June 11. Counties facing moves back up to higher risk levels this week are in a warning week only, giving county health partners an addi- tional week to focus efforts on driving case numbers back down before addition- al health and safety restric- tions are renewed. When Oregon achieves a first dose 70% statewide vaccination rate for resi- dents 18 or older, Oregon will lift all risk level health and safety restrictions. Some restrictions based on CDC guidance for use of masks and physical distanc- ing may remain in place. [Note: Previous announce- ments had based the 70% vaccination metric on resi- dents 16 or older, however, in order to align state data with CDC data, the Oregon Health Authority is track- ing adult vaccination rates for residents 18 and older.] Data regarding Lane County testing, patient status, case ZIP codes and more is available at www. For Schick, this is another reason for taking the poll and inte- grating the thoughts of the respondents into the final decisions as to which op- tion is best suited for Flor- ence area residents, first responders and the city. “There have been many discussions by the boards and with our employees and volunteers on if we should merge operations and how to do it. The one bit of information that we are missing is how the public feels about a po- tential merger,” Schick said. “We aren’t even sure if people know that there are two separate districts providing fire suppression and EMS.” Data gathered from the poll will be made available during the strategic plan- ning processes of the two district. “The community’s par- ticipation is very import- ant so these two emer- gency service districts can better understand the community’s opinions and point of view on fire and ambulance services,” Schick said. There are at least three possible outcomes that could come about as a re- sult of the information gathered, including a con- tinuation of the merger, a return to separate op- erations and a possible third party, either private or contracted, to handle all emergency calls in this area. For more information, visit www.svfr.com and westernlaneambulance. com. Fire and EMS Chief Michael Schick is coordi- nating the numerous ele- ments of the merger and has responded to concerns by hiring a professional polling firm to elicit the opinions of residents re- garding the merger. The poll will start Mon- day, June 7, with calls made to random phone numbers divided by precincts. According to Schick, the poll will add more public input to the decision-mak- ing process and assist with the creation of an updated strategic plan. “The idea of a public poll first came up when we established a committee made up of directors from Western Lane Ambulance District and Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue to look at what it will take to merge the operations of the two Districts,” Schick said. “We are using a polling com- pany and they have a lot Surfside Restaurant at Drift wood Shores Resort Is Open for Dine-in & take out from 4pm - 8:30 pm Tuesday - Saturday O L D S C H O OL Call 541-902-6447 RECLINE & REWIND WITH POWER BOOST Drift wood Shores Resort 88416 1st Avenue, Florence FABRIC AND LEATHER 1550 6TH ST. & HWY 101 MONDAY—SATURDAY 10-5 541-997-9424 CORRECTION In an advertisement that ran Saturday, May 29, the ad should have read, “Paid for by some Florentine Estate Own- ers”.
