She picked up 2 points from a layup, as well as 3 more rebounds and a steal. Perkins picked up an- other 2 rebounds for Siuslaw in addition. Towards the end of the third quarter, junior Maisie Jones picked up 2 points from the top of the key, fol- lowed by another two points from sophomore Denali Sleeper just before the quar- ter’s end, bringing the score to 42-13. In the last quarter, Jones picked up a rebound for the Lady Viks, and freshman Ashley Hennessee had 2. Freeman scored Siuslaw’s fi- nal 2 points with 1:00 left in the game, and the final score was 43-15. The girls fought hard throughout, despite the dis- advantage of missing four players on their team. According to Cole, “I be- lieve that once we get these girls to have a little more confidence in themselves that we will have a fun and positive season looking ahead, and having those girls back on the court will hope- fully boost their confidence.” The Lady Viks’ next game, which will be their first offi- cial league game, is Tuesday (May 25) at Marist starting at 7:15 p.m. at their schools. There is yet to be decided the amount of compensation these athletes will be re-ceiv- ing. Some questions I have are: Will all football players be paid the same amount? Will basketball men be paid more than the women bas- ketball players? Will the money an athlete receives from product endorsements be subtracted from his pay from the university? How long until other non-reve- nue sport athletes demand to be paid? The face of colle- giate sports changed during COVID but it was a tempo- rary change. The ruling in June by the SCOTUS will be a forever change. As a sports fan, I will miss the enthusiasm and joy ex- hibited by athletes in mul- tiple sports no longer being offered. The thrill of victory may just be agony after the law is upheld. Those few greedy athletes and their universities will deprive thousands of athletes their opportunity to participate beyond high school.
