2A | WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 2021 | SIUSLAW NEWS On The Record OBITUARY MARSH—Evelyn Ann Marsh, born May 28, 1930, passed away April 19, 2021. Evelyn was beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Evelyn died peacefully after a bad fall, at the age of 90, on April 19, 2021. She was at her home in Portland with family members at her side. Evelyn Her part- Marsh ner of 70+ years, Owen, had passed just three months earlier. A third generation Cal- ifornian, Evelyn was born an only child in North Hol- lywood to parents Eva and Hurfey Hadlock. She grew up there, among a loving extended family of grand- parents, aunts, uncles and cousins in the surrounding area; several ancestors be- ing original Anglo settlers in the southern Californian area. Meeting her life-long sweetheart Owen early in high school, they married in 1950 and celebrated 70 loving years together last August. Settling in the San Fer- nando Valley, she and Owen had two children, daughter Cheri and son Randy. Sadly, Randy died a young adolescent — an ac- cidental death that Evelyn mourned deeply the rest of her life. A baby boy, Scott, was adopted in 1967. After ex- periencing such a positive adoptive experience, she was an inspired volunteer for Children’s Home Soci- ety for over two decades, committed to supporting this organization that cares for parents and children through the adoption pro- cess. A consummate home- maker in the best sense of the word, not only did she make a home and dedicate her life to her family, she did it with gusto and artist- ry. She thoroughly enjoyed entertaining, gaving great dinner parties and fun, large events her whole life. A marvelous cook and baker, you were lucky to have tasted her delicious la- sagna or famous brownies. Evelyn had a spark in her eye and a wit to her tongue up through her last days, and she is remembered for her robust laugh. Quick to speak her mind, she wasn’t one to hold back and didn’t suffer fools lightly. She was known as “E.A.”, “Mary Agnes”, “Louise”, “Nippy” and specially “George” by her adoring husband Owen, who had a penchant for nicknames. They had called each other “George” since high school; she was “Lil George” to his “Big George.” Nature was a passion for her. There wasn’t an animal that didn’t love her, as she did them. Nor was there a plant that she couldn’t grow, always growing masses of flowers and surrounding their family homes with an artistic landscape. An avid bird watcher her whole life, she could iden- tify all kinds and delighted in tracking them outside her windows and on their many travels. When Owen retired in 1991, Evelyn and he moved to Florence, Ore. There, they built a beautiful home as some of the first resi- dents in Florentine Estates, cultivating a warm circle of friends in the neigh- borhood and surrounding community. Evelyn took to her new hometown with zest, join- ing the Florentine Bridge Club and supporting the neighborhood in many ways. Taking pleasure in the gardens around town, she became an active mem- ber of the Florence Garden Club, finding much joy in the many friendships she made there and propagat- ing countless plant starts for their infamous plant sale. Owen and Evelyn sold their treasured home in Florence in 2019, relocat- ing to Portland, Ore., to live with their daughter Cher and her husband Ric Levendosky, and to be near grandchildren Yara and Aram and their spouses Ju- lio and Mattie, along with great-grandchildren Omar, Lucia, and Vera. Evelyn is also survived by son Scott. Upon hearing of her death, various stories came to the family of Evelyn’s warm and welcoming spir- it, and her little and big kindnesses to many, for which she will be fondly re- membered. In remembrance of Ev- elyn’s life, the family asks that any charitable dona- tions may be made to the Florence Garden Club Scholarship Fund (mail to 75 Shelter Cove Way Flor- ence, OR 97439), a cause of which she was particularly proud. Oregon approved to issue more than $550 million in SNAP food assistance for children SALEM — The State of Oregon received approval from the federal govern- ment to issue Pandem-ic EBT (P-EBT) for the 2020- 21 school year. This will provide more than $550 million in food assistance for approximately 572,000 children in Oregon. P-EBT provides food benefits to families whose children do not have access to the free or reduced-price meals usually provided at school. Oregon was ap- proved to provide retroac- tive food benefits to eligible students for the 2020-21 school year. The P-EBT benefits are expected to be issued begin- ning in July. ODHS and ODE share responsibility in ensuring that children across Oregon receive P-EBT food bene- fits. ODE collaborates with school districts across Ore- gon to determine eligibility and ODHS issues the ben- efits on Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards. Households do not need to apply for P-EBT. Benefits will be automatically issued for students who normally have access to free and re- duced-price meals and are enrolled at a school in Ore- gon. If your children are not currently enrolled in free or reduced meals you can apply through your school or online at the Oregon De- partment of Education web- site. Qualifying for free or reduced meals for the 2020- 21 school year before June 30 will ensure you receive P-EBT when the benefits are issued. P-EBT benefit eligibility and amounts will vary. Visit pebt.oregon.gov for more information. Each student will receive their own P-EBT card. Stu- dents and households new to P-EBT and households with more than one stu- dent will receive an Oregon P-EBT card in the mail with in-structions. Cards will be mailed to the address on file with the school for those students who do not receive SNAP. • Find a food pantry: foodfinder.oregonfood- bank.org • Learn about govern- ment programs and com- munity resources for older adults and people with dis- abilities: Aging and Disabil- ity Resource Connection of Oregon at 1-855-673-2372. JIMMIE THE ROTARIAN Jimmie Hart is our Florence , Oregon Rotarian of The Month and sadly Jimmie passed away unexpectedly a few short days after receiving the honor. Jimmie had been a member of the Rotary Club of Florence since 2006 and had previously been named Rotarian of The Year. Over the past several years Jimmie had been a member of the Club Board as well as Club Treasurer. Plant Your Summer Oasis! • • • • • • • JIMMIE THE MAN If you were to ask any of our club members who their favorite Rotarian is, they would say, with few exceptions, that it is Jimmie Hart. Jimmie never talked about his life or even himself. He never really knew the impact he had on fellow Rotarians or how much we all looked forward to seeing him each week. He came to each club meeting, function or fund raiser giving his all and never holding back. Nor did he ever let a challenge go unanswered. Jimmie met each challenge, as he lived every day of his life, with calm, focus, and joy. One Rotarian stated that he was like a father; you knew he was there even if you couldn’t see him, he was always there to help you in any way he could, and he always had your back. Knowing Jimmie made each of us a better Rotarian and a better person.
