2B | WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS District from 1B Grove, and he just held the guy off, so he gets another shot.” In the 1500 meters, Samuel Ulrich and Chad Hughes took first and second place with times of 4:19.64a and 4:19.99a, which allows them to go to the state meet for the event as well. Ulrich won Oustanding Male Runner of the meet, and also took first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.83a. He will represent the Vikings at state in that event as well. In the 400 meters, Jaxson Jensen took sec- ond with a time of 55.42a and will compete in the state event this weekend. One of the more sur- prising upsets of the sea- son was brought by Elijah Blankenship, who spent most of his time on the baseball team this season but was able to place sec- ond in the 200 meters (23.61a) and the 100 meters (11.74a), with the district meet being only the second track meet Blankenship competed in for his whole high school career. “Just watching him play football, we knew he had some foot speed, but he qualified in four events,” said Johnson. “We had two kids who were sick at the end of the meet and couldn’t run the 4x400, and one of the last things I did before my entries were closed was to throw Elijah’s name in there — just in case they needed him. “It’s one thing to go run a 100-meter race, but running a 400 is a whole different world when you haven’t done any train- ing.” The 4x100 team took first at the meet with a 45.63a, and the 4x400 team took second with a time of 3:41.91a. Both relay teams will compete at state this weekend. The 4x100 team includes Hunter Petterson, who also took first in the 100 meters race with an 11.73a, Lacouture, James Smith, Blankenship, Jensen and Loomis. On the girls’ side, Andrea Osbon took first place in the shot put with a 39-03.00, as well as sec- ond in both the discus (107-04) and the javelin (109-08 PR). Osbon will compete at state in all three events. On the track, Brea Blankenship took first in the 800 meters with a 2:30.89a, and second in the 1500 meters with a 5:09.47a, earning her a state appearance in both events this weekend. Rylee Colton took sec- ond in both the 800 (2:31.05a) and 3000 meters, in which she ran a PR time of 11:04.50a; she will run in both races for the Vikings at state. Both Brea Blankenship and Colton were also on the winning 4x400 relay team, in addition to Corduroy Holbrook and Gracie Freudenthal. The team finished first with a time of 4:26.92a and will compete at state with Arianna Brown and Jane Lacouture on the team as well. Finally, on the girls’ team, Freudenthal had fantastic performances in both hurdles competi- tions, coming in first in the 100-meter hurdles with a season record (SR) of 16.12a, and second in the 300m hurdles with a SR of 48.46a. She will compete in both events at state this week-end. “It’s been a long process from when she last ran a hurdle race as a sopho- more to this season,” explained Johnson, “and this season was really short, so we really had to do a lot of heavy lifting late. She came on just when she needed to. I think she’s in a good place compared to where she was even a week ago.” The state meet will take place at Siuslaw High School this Friday and Saturday (May 21-22), beginning at 11 a.m. both days. Tickets can be pur- chased at bit.ly/siuslaw- tickets for $3 per event, and spectators are encouraged to rotate in and out as events end, as only 100 spectators are allowed in total at any given time.
