By Zeahna Young Siuslaw News T his past weekend (May 14-15), Siuslaw hosted and competed in the Sky-Em League district meet for track and field. The boys’ team won the title for the league with 194.5 points, and the girls’ team came in third place with 105 points. As a result, the Vikings have ath- letes compet-ing in multiple events this weekend at the 4A state championships — also at Siuslaw. According to Athletic Director and coach Chris Johnson, going into the meet they knew the boys were in a position to do well based on their analysis of competi- tor stats leading up to the district finals. “The boys won handily. With track and field,” he explained, “you can put together a form chart and you can predict — based on people’s best marks — a pretty accurate picture of what the team looks like. We had a pretty substantial lead on the form chart, and it’s tough to make up a lot of points on those. So, we were fairly confident we were poised to get the job done, and they did great.” In the field events, Avery Hart took first in shot put with a personal record (PR) of 42-03.75, and will throw at the state meet this weekend. Skyler Loomis took first in javelin with a 155-06, second in discus with a 127-11, and seventh in shot put with a 36-08.50. His performance in the throws earned him honors as Outstanding Male Thrower of the district meet. He will compete in both the javelin and discus at state. Christian Newlan also performed well in the discus, coming in third with a PR of 125-01, which earned him a wild card placement in the state meet this coming weekend. In addition to Newlan, both Camp Lacouture and Kyle Hughes won wildcard placements with their performances in the pole vault. The two placed fourth and fifth, respectively, each clearing 12-06.00, which were the next best marks in the state — allowing them to qualify. Lacou-ture also placed second in the 300m hurdles with a PR of 44.49a and will compete this week- end in the event at the state meet. On the track, the boys had some amaz- ing performances as well. Chad and Kyle Hughes took first and second place, respec- tively, in the 3000 meters, earning both athletes a spot at state. Chad finished with a 9:30.24a, lapping several of the other run- ners in the race, and Kyle fin-ished with a PR of 9:35.21a. Motorcycles lined the streets and people were trying to get back to normalcy. I don’t think it’s over yet, but it’s starting to look like we have an ending in sight. I think this was a huge dent in history and we will never forget how devastating it was. As for real estate, it still hasn’t gotten back to normal. We still have a very low inventory and prices are sky high. Out of the 35 active residences for sale, only 21 are under $700,000. Th ere were 22 pending for the week and 7 solds.
