On Wednesday (May 5),
Mapleton hosted its final track
meet of the season at home.
Seven other schools from the 1A
District 2 League were in atten-
dance, and in addition to finish-
ing first with Personal Records
(PRs) in several events, both
Sailors teams took fourth place
overall in the meet.
Mapleton’s boys team fared
quite well in all participated
events. On the field, JJ Neece
took first place in shot put, jave-
lin and the triple jump, setting
PRs in the shot put (38-5.5) and
the javelin (158-3). Neece is cur-
rently ranked first in Mapleton’s
league for the javelin, second for
the 100 meters, fourth in triple
jump and fifth in shot put.
On the track, Joe Shepard also
had a standout day, finishing
first in the 1500 meters with a
time of 4:55.00a. Shepard, who
is currently first in the league for
the 1500M, explained, “Initially,

On Tuesday (May 4), Siuslaw’s softball team
traveled to Elmira for their final game against
the Falcons for the season. The Lady Viks
started off the game strong but struggled to
score after the start of the game, losing to El-
mira after 5 innings 2-12.
Siuslaw was first at-bat in Tuesday’s game,
and catcher Adri Edwards was able to get on
base straightaway. After stealing second, and
advancing to third after a single from Bailey
Overton, Edwards stole home for the Vikings’
first run. Overton stole second and third base,
coming home for a run after a single hit by
Meika Shappell for an RBI; however, three
consecutive strikeouts ended the first half of
the inning for Siuslaw.
The Falcons’ first at-bat cycled through
their entire lineup, and Elmira was able to
pull in 6 runs in the bottom of the first before
ending their turn at the plate. Although the
Falcons scored several runs to start the game,
the Vikings’ Kya Blake had three killer put
outs at first base with 2 assists coming from
Overton and 1 from Shappell.
The second inning was quick for both

Siuslaw's Noah Dotson beats the tag at home during Tuesday's
doubleheader at Elmira High School.
“I am really proud of the ef-
fort given by the team today.
It was a weird circumstance
to have to finish up this
game,” said Coach Tom Shinn
of the Vikings’ baseball team’s
execution in Tuesday’s (May
4) first game at Elmira.
It was indeed a strange sit-
uation, as Siuslaw’s first game
against Elmira on Tuesday
was actually the second half
of a game which started the
first week of the season on
April 16, as game two of a
home doubleheader.
That first doubleheader
went late, so the umpires had
to call the game after only
three innings, leading to Siu-
slaw and Elmira rescheduling
the second half of game two
for the schools’ next meeting
— which ended up being this
past week.
Although the Vikings were
playing on the road, they
were technically “at home”
for the first game on Tuesday,
starting on defense at the top
of the fourth inning, behind
8-13.
With Elijah Blankenship
pitching to Jason Garcia, and
half a season more of expe-
rience behind the team, they
picked up where they left off
