8A | WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 2021 | SIUSLAW NEWS Library Tidings Book Review “The Rope” by Alex Tresniowski In the tranquil seaside town of Asbury Park, New Jersey, schoolgirl Marie Smith is brutally murdered. Small-town officials, unable to find the culprit, call upon the young manager of a New York detective agency for help. It is the detective’s first murder case, and the specif- ics of the investigation and daring sting operation that caught the killer are captured in all their rich detail for the first time. Occurring exactly halfway between the end of the Civil War in 1865 and the formal beginning of the civil rights movement in 1954, the ruth- less murder and its highly covered investigation sit at the historic intersection of sweeping national forces — religious extremism, class struggle, the infancy of crim- inal forensics and racial vio- lence of Jim Crow America. History and true crime collide in “The Rope,” a sen- sational murder mystery fea- turing characters as complex and colorful as those found in the best psychological thrillers — the unconven- tional truth-seeking detec- tive Ray Schindler; a chilling villain; the ambitious Asbury Park sheriff Clarence Het- rick; the mysterious “sting artist” Carl Neumeister; the indomitable crusader Ida B. Wells; and the victim, Marie Smith, who represented all the innocent and vulnerable children living in turn-of- the-century America. Gripping and powerful, “The Rope” is an important piece of history that gives a voice to the voiceless and resurrects a long-forgotten true crime. The Library in “Extreme” Risk The library is making a few modifications with the announcement that Lane County has gone to “ex- treme” COVID risk. Brows- ing will continue. Even with a conservative estimate, the library is not exceeding the recommended occupancy for extreme risk. Internet computer usage will be sus- pended at this time. Due to the very small in- terior space at the Mapleton branch, that branch library will be reverting to curb- side pickup, beginning to- morrow, Thursday, May 6. Curbside in Mapleton will continue with the extended hours —noon to 5 p.m., only on Thursdays — that we’ve had for the past month. Hopefully this will only last a few short weeks and Rhody Run to take place May 15 The annual Rhody Run 5K/10K Run-Walk will be held Saturday, May 15, at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. For those participating, please plan to follow all ap- plicable COVID-19 safety protocols.
