2B | WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS Track from 1B League for the 3000 meters. On the field, Avery Hart threw the winning mark in shot put after landing a PR at 40-08.25. Teammate Skyler Loomis placed first in both the discus and jav- elin, with a PR of 130-01 in the discus, and a throw of 152-05 in javelin. Hart is now ranked first Baseball from 1B inning, Siuslaw scored a run in the second, as well as 2 more runs in the third for a 3-0 lead. Again, neither team scored in the fourth in- ning, but in the fifth inning the Lions began to turn the tables. According to Shinn, “The fifth inning was a problem for us. A couple of errors led to some un- earned runs that helped their momentum.” The Lions picked up 3 runs that inning, tying the game, while the Viks were unable to score during their turn at the plate in the bottom of the inning. Siuslaw brought in Beau Erickson for relief on the mound in the sixth inning, with Blankenship having picked up 7 strikeouts in five innings. But the Lions continued their momen- tum into inning six, scor- ing 2 more runs and taking the lead. Siuslaw picked up anoth- er run in the sixthe, going into the final inning be- hind by just 1 run, 4-5. In the final inning, the Viks brought in Andrew Nor- man-Jensen, who struck out 2 Lions batter, but Softball from 1B toughness shown through- out the team.” With Cate Waggoner pitching to Adri Edwards at the start of the game, the girls gave up 3 runs to the Lions in the first inning be- fore tagging out two differ- ent players at first base — where Kya Blake had 2 put outs with one assist from short stop Bailey Overton, and one from second base- man Lizbeth Garcia-Gal- van. In the bottom of the first, Garcia-Galvan had a dou- ble for 2 RBIs, bringing the score to 2-3 by the end of the inning. In the next inning, the Viks gave up 6 runs to the Lions, providing Cottage Grove with a comfortable lead before 3 more put outs at first base from Blake. In the bottom of the second inning, Hayden Muller hit a single for an RBI, giving Siuslaw 1 run for the in- ning — with the score 9-3 in favor of the Lions head- ing into the third. “The Vikings had too many errors to overcome in order to earn a win in in the league overall for shot put following Friday’s performance. Although the girls’ team did not finish first, they had outstanding perfor- mances and new records at the meet. On the track, for the 1500 meters, Brea Blankenship and Rylee Colton placed second (5:05.57a) and third (5:05.69a), respectively, both finishing with PR times. In the 3000-meter race, Viking freshmen dominated, with Jane Lacouture taking first with a PR time of 12:35.58a and Corduroy Holbrook com- ing in second with a PR of 12:36.44a. Gracie Freudenthal took second place in the 100- meter hurdles (17.67a) and third in the 300H (52.18a). The senior ran season-re- cord time in both races. The girls also took first place in the 4x400 relay, with Blankenship, Arrianna Brown, Colton and Freudenthal finishing with a time of 4:33.53a. On the field, Andrea Osbon continues to domi- nate, smashing the 40-foot milestone mark in the shot put with a PR at 41-02.00. Osbon also dominated the discus with a PR of 116-02 Cottage Grove managed 1 more run while holding the Viks away from home plate to secure the win, 6-4 over Siuslaw. Although, they did not come out with the win, Siu- slaw did well at the plate, with Isaac Garza hitting 3-for-4 and picking up an RBI. Ian Sissel went 2-for-4 and had 2 RBIs. “We did a good job of limiting the number of errors in the game,” said Shinn. The Viks started game two with Garza pitching to Garcia. They gave up 2 runs in the first inning, but then quickly silenced the Lions with three quick outs: Ian Sissel caught a pop fly in the outfield then, on an attempted stolen base, Garcia threw to Vic- tor Reyna-Ayala at second base for a tagout. Garza struck out the last batter. In the bottom of the first, the Vikings answered the Lions with 2 runs of their own. Erickson and Garcia each singled and stole 2 bases, with Garcia picking up 2 RBIs. Siuslaw was able to get the bases loaded but then had a strikeout and 2 pop flies on its next three at-bats to end the inning. In the second inning, the Lions picked up 3 runs to the Vikings’ 1, bring- ing the score to 3-5. In the third, Garza picked up 3 more strikeouts but the Li- ons were still able to score twice — bringing the score to 7-4 by the end of the in- ning. In the fourth, the Viks brought Erickson to the mound after 2 more Lions runs. Meanwhile, Siuslaw went scoreless in the bot- tom of the inning. Erickson had a strikeout in the top of the fifth, and was then switched out for Clay Kramer, who finished the game. The Viks gave up 2 more runs before their next at-bat and, going into the bottom of the fifth, Siu- slaw trailed 11-4. The Vikings sparked a rally in the bottom of the inning, with singles for Blankenship, Garcia and Henry Rankin. Blanken- ship stole his way home, with Garcia and Rankin both picking up RBIs. In all, they scored 5 runs in the inning, closing the gap to within two runs, 11-9. Unfortunately, darkness heading into the 6th inning and, in the bottom of the inning after holding the Li- ons scoreless during their at bat, the game was called — leaving the tying runs from Kramer and Blanken- ship on base. The final score was 11-9 in favor of the Lions. “I have to give their pitcher some credit for being able to keep us off balance. We put the ball in play well in this game,” said Shinn. “However, there were several instanc- es where kids hit the ball right on the screw and it went right to the Cottage Grove players.” The Viks hit stronger in game two than in the opener, with Erickson and Rankin both hitting .500, Sissel hitting 2-for-3 and Garcia hitting .1000. Gar- cia also had a total of 3 RBIs and 1 run for the game. “Real proud of Jason Garcia behind the plate,” said Shinn. “He had to catch both games of the doubleheader and [was] still working to block pitches and throw out run- ners stealing second.” Siuslaw went on to play Elmira away for a double- header last night (May 4) in a make-up game from April 16 at home. Both games were played after print deadlines. Siuslaw plays again this Friday (May 7), away at Marshfield for a double- header starting at 3 p.m. game one of the double- header,” explained O’Mara. In the third inning, Cot- tage Grove only picked up 1 run, but the Viks were unable to score despite singles by Meika Shappell, Brooke Olson and Blake. During inning fourth, Siuslaw seemed to break Cottage Grove’s momen- tum, holding the Lions to just 1 run while having their best inning of the game. After Edwards and Muller were both walked — with each picking up a stolen base — Overton knocked a home run, nab- bing 3 RBIs and bringing the score to 6-11 by the end of the inning. Unfortunately, the Vi- kings were not able to score for the remainder of the game, while the Lions picked up 6 more runs for a final score of 17-6 in favor of Cottage Grove. According to O’Mara, “The offense and defense was going to have to make some adjustments if they were to have an opportuni- ty to score their first league win in the second game of the night.” In the nightcap, Siuslaw did just that, fighting un- til the very end to take the win. Cottage Grove scored 1 run in the first inning, but Siuslaw answered in the second with 3 trips across the plate and taking a 3-1 lead. The Lions roared back, picking up 5 more runs by the end of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. However, the Viks picked up 1 run in the fifth and held the Lions scoreless until the sixth in- ning, when they brought 1 more run home. But this time it was the Vikings who roared, knocking in 4 runs to take a narrow 8-7 lead. Siuslaw kept the Lions away from home plate in the seventh as the Vikings picked up their first win. On offense, Overton had another monumental game, picking up another homerun as well as a dou- ble, 2 RBIs, 2 runs and 2 stolen bases. Muller went hit .500 at the plate and picked up 4 RBIs along with 1 run. Kristin Wall went-2-for3, with 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Waggoner pitched the entire second game, com- pleting her first game as a winning pitcher with 3 strikeouts and limiting the Lions to only 8 hits in game two. On defense, Overton had a total of 8 assists and 7 put outs for the evening, in- cluding 3 tag outs on stolen base attempts. Muller had 2 put outs and 1 assist. “The athletes have been facing challenges and ad- versity all season long and, up to this point, we had not been able to over- come these issues with a complete game effort,” explained O’Mara. “Now that the athletes have that first win, we have set our sights on not back-sliding with our approach to prac- tice and games. There was a great deal of discussion after the game amongst the coaching staff and athletes about building on this win through a sustained effort to improve in practice and be prepared for the games ahead.” The Viks play a mnake- up game at Elmira last night (after press dead- lines.) Siuslaw plays again Friday at Marshfield. First game is at 3 p.m. — seciring wins in both events. Osbon went on to place second in the javelin at 99-01. She is currently ranked first in the Sky-Em for both the shot put and discus after Friday’s meet. Following last Friday’s move to the “Extreme Risk” category for Lane County, Siuslaw canceled its meet at Newport sched- uled for yesterday (May 4), opting to host a home inter-squad meet instead. Siuslaw’s next meet will be the Wally Ciochetti Invitational at Cottage Grove this Friday (May 7), beginning at 2 p.m. On Siuslaw!
