Get outdoors and add a spring to your step with some forest and nature journaling hikes at the South Slough Reserve. • Nature Hike—April 28, 1 p.m. Hike through forest, marsh and swamp and explore the local flora and fauna. Learn about the latest research and stewardship projects at the Reserve. This one-mile hike is of moderate difficulty. We will meet at South Slough Visitors Center. The hike lasts about two hours. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and bring plen- ty of water and snacks. By Zeahna Young Siuslaw News n Friday (April 23), Siuslaw’s track team hosted the Central Coast Invitational at home. Overall, the girls’ team came in sixth place with a combined score of 68.5. The boys team placed second with a score of 129. The Vikings had some impressive individual perfor- mances that have put some of their athletes among the top of 4A division marks so far this season. On the boys’ side, Chad Hughes ran a personal record (PR) of 9:33.10a in the 3000 meters, earning him the 4A division’s fastest time for that event. Another notable perfor- mance for boys’ team came from Sam Ulrich and Jaxson Jensen in the 800-meter race. On the baseball diamond, the Beau Erickson started on the mound, pitching to Jason Garcia, with Erickson throwing one strikeout in three innings before Elijah Blankenship was brought in for relief. Blankenship went on to finish on the mound for Siuslaw. Offensively, the Viks struggled to get on the score- board until the fourth in- ning. Erickson was first to score for Siuslaw by stealing home, followed by Garcia. By the end of Siuslaw’s at bat in the fourth, they had scored 2 runs to Marist’s 8. The Spartans then went on See ODFW REGIONAL FISHING REPORT www.dfw.state.or.us/RR MID-COAST LAKES: Mid-coast lakes are full of trout and the fishing has been good. Many of the lakes have been stocked twice now and several others received stock- ings in mid-March. Here is a list of the lakes that have been stocked so far this year: Thissel Pond, Cleawox, Munsel, Mercer, Alder, Dune, Buck, Lost, Carter, Devils, Woahink, Elbow, Siltcoos, Eckman, and Big Creek Reservoirs #1 and #2. All of these lakes are scheduled to receive more trout stockings in April as well. SIUSLAW RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing continues to be slow on the Siuslaw and is slowing down for the season which closed March 31. Trout fishing in streams opens on May 22. Hatchery fish are also planted in Lake Creek and are released into Green Creek. These returning hatchery fish will start to show up in December and peak in January and February. Lake Creek closed to all fishing on March 31 and will open on May 22 for trout fishing. ALSEA RIVER: Winter steel- head Winter steelhead fishing continues to be slow on the Alsea. The recent rain improved the conditions and the fishing picked up a bit. Overall, it continues to be slow and the run is winding down for the year as we head into April. Although it has been a slow year there are still fish to be caught in the system through the month of March. The Alsea River remains open to steelhead fishing through April and then closes on April 30. Trout fishing in streams opens on May 22. The later returning wild broodstock fish are providing the majority of the catch now and typically peak in February and March. SALMON RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing closes on the Salmon River on March 31. Trout fishing in streams will open on May 22.
