fourth inning, bringing
the score to 11-2 heading
into the fifth.
Following a pitching
change for Marist, the Vi-
kings’ Victor Reyna-Ayala
scored a more run in the
fifth, on and RBI double
from Blankenship.
In the bottom of inning,
the Spartans scored twice
more to move ahead 13-3
and end the game early
due to the 10-run rule.
According to Siuslaw
coach Tom Shinn, “Errors
again put us in a difficult
place. Of the 13 runs we
gave up in game one, only
six were earned.”

Hike—April 30, 1 p.m.
Come for a walk in the
woods and learn the best
practices for starting a
nature journal.
Discover how seeing a
trail through pencil and
pen can be one of the
best ways to hike. This
one-mile hike is of mod-
erate difficulty.
We will meet at the
South Slough Visitor
Center.
The hike lasts about
two hours. Dress for the
weather, wear sturdy
shoes and bring plenty of
water and snacks. Pencil,
of errors, Shinn said the
Viks showed continued
improvement from their
last game. “I felt we did a
better job of putting the
ball in play and making
Marist have to get outs.”
Going into the night-
cap, Shinn knew that the
boys would have to tight-
en up in order to compete
with the Spartans. The
Viks started Garcia on the
mound, with Blankenship
behind the plate.
The result of game two
was much improved over
the opener.
“It was an exciting
game. We were aggressive
on the basepaths,” Shin
said. “I was really happy
with the way the men con-
tinued to work and grind
out at bats.”
This time, the Viks
didn’t score in the first
two innings, and gave up
5 runs to Marist.
“If we hadn’t spotted
them 5 runs over the first
two innings, it would have
been a very different ball
game,” said Shinn. “Jason
Garcia settled in in the
3rd inning, pitched very
well and got us back into
the game.”
The third inning start-
ed with Blankenship hit-
ting a double on his first
pitch, eventually steal-
ing his way to third base
and coming home on
an RBI from Erickson.
This seemed to shift the
momentum of the game
moving forward.
Garcia had 2 strike-
outs in the bottom of the
third, and the Viks were
able to hold the Spartans
at 5 runs for the inning —
pulling Siuslaw to within
4 runs of the Spartans at
5-1.
In the fourth inning,
Clay Kramer hit a single
and stole two bases before
being brought home on
an RBI double from Rey-
na-Ayala.
The Viks held the Spar-
tans scoreless for another
inning and closed the gap
to within 3 runs heading
into the fifth, where Blan-
kenship connected for an-
other double. From there,
he stole third and scored
on another RBI from Er-
ickson.
Next, Garcia hit a sin-
gle, stole his way to third
and came home on an RBI
single from Isaac Garza.
Perhaps the most ex-
citing moment for the
the 4A division in the 800
meters after finishing sec-
ond with her season-re-
cord time of 2:24.92a.
In addition, Rylee
Colton had a fantastic per-
formance in the girls’ 3000
meters, finishing first with
a PR of 11:15.84a.
On the field, Andrea
Osbon had another stellar
week, winning both the
shot put and discus, with
throws of 35-10 and a 103-
07, respectively. Osbon
also landed third in javelin
with a throw of 97-01.
Tuesday, Siuslaw trav-
eled to Cottage Grove
(after press deadlines). The
Viks’ next meet is this
Friday (April 30), when
they host the Sky-Em
League Showcase, begin-
ning at 4 p.m.
It was also made official
this week that, in addition
to hosting the Sky-Em
League District meet,
Siuslaw will host the 4A
State Championships this
season for the first time in
the school’s history.
Both will be held in May.

SILETZ RIVER: Winter
steelhead
Steelhead fishing on the
Siletz River improved last
week with the bump in
river levels but has slowed
down now with the low
and clear conditions. The
Siletz River remains open
year-round for steelhead
fishing and provides
opportunity through April
for winter steelhead and
then summer steelhead
typically start to show up
in decent numbers in May.
Fish are now distributed
throughout the river from
the boat sections up
through the gorge. Mid-
February to mid-March is
typically the peak for Siletz
winter steelheading.
The 4-mile bridge (aka
Steel Bridge) in the Siletz
gorge is open to motorized

only.

Your health and well-

er things, participants
will need to wear a mask
at all times.
Additionally, a tem-
perature check, using a

be performed at the be-
ginning of the program.
Any participants with a

100.4° F/37.8° C can not
participate.
Vikings was Ian Sissel’s
2-run homer in the fifth,
which scored Garza and
put Siuslaw ahead, 6-5.
“The top of the fifth was
a real game changer,” said
Shinn. “Pushing two runs
across before Ian’s homer-
un definitely got the men
fired up.”
After Marist managed
to tie the game in the
bottom of the inning, the
Viks brought Garza to
the mound for relief, with
Garza holding Marist
scoreless in the fifth.
In the sixth, Siuslaw’s
momentum continued as
the Viks scored 3 more
runs while holding Marist
scoreless for the inning
— and putting Siuslaw up
9-6.
Unfortunately,
the
Spartans struck back in
the bottom of the sev-
enth inning with 5 runs
to eventually nudge the
Viks, 11-10.
Softball
On the softball side, the
girls struggled to get on
base in both games and
were unable to score any
runs against the Spar-
tans. Both games were
called early due to the 10-
run rule, with the Spar-
tans sweeping the dou-
ble header 15-0 in both
match-ups.
Both Siuslaw teams
played yesterday at home
against Junction City
(after press deadlines)
and will be back on the
field Friday (April 30)
for home doubleheaders
against Cottage Grove.
First games are at 3 p.m.
