SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14, 2021 | 9A 90by30 launches ‘5,000 Strong’ campaign Statistics show that 24,000 children, or one in three kids, in Lane Coun- ty have experienced abuse or neglect in their lives, adversely impacting their ability to learn, connect and thrive. 90by30 is a Lane County initiative managed by the University of Ore- gon’s College of Education with the goal of “reducing child abuse in Lane Coun- ty by 90 percent by the year 2030.” Florence and surround- ing communities comprise West Lane Region of the county. Since 2018, the West Lane Regional Lead- ership Team has initiated a number of successful proj- ects aimed at reducing child abuse in our local commu- nities. To date the majority of funding has come from grants and private dona- tions. The projects are run by local volunteers. In order to continue de- livering its current projects and to initiate new projects, 90by30 is launching the 5,000 Strong Campaign. 5,000 Strong is comprised of individuals, businesses, faith communities, non- profits and organizations across Lane County who make a commitment to take action that will help make Lane County a place where kids are safe and families are supported. West Lane’s goal in the 5,000 Strong Campaign is to raise $25,000 from 250 individu- als, organizations and busi- nesses in order to fund cur- rent and future projects. People can also follow 90by30 on Facebook. Check out the blue pin- wheel gardens you will see around Florence and Ma- pleton during the month of April celebrating Child Abuse Prevention Month. Tell your friends about 90by30, either by word-of- mouth or via social media. People can also join the West Lane Regional Lead- ership Team. Child abuse is prevented when kids are connected, families are supported and community members take positive action. We can all play our part to reduce child abuse in West Lane. 90by30 welcomes your participa- tion in the 5,000 Strong Campaign, at whatever lev- el. Your contribution will help ensure that our proj- ects continue to thrive, ben- efiting all kids and families. The community is invit- ed to consider making a gift of $100 a year to support 90by30’s current and up- coming projects. A dona- tion of $100 a year amounts to about $9 per month and will make you part of the 5000 Strong Team. We also value one-time gifts. Dona- tions can be made at friend- sof90by30.org. You can stipulate that your dona- tion is for the 5,000 Strong Campaign and that you want your gift to be used to support programs specifi- cally in West Lane region. Ninety percent of dollars raised stay in this region. The remaining 10 percent will be used to support ad- ministrative costs to run the campaign. These scholarships are open to graduates of Siuslaw High School and home-schooled students in the Florence area. Students must plan to at- tend an accredited college, community or university, or certified tech school. Students must demon- strate academic potential or achievement, leadership and character. The following items must accompany the application: a financial statement, an of- ficial transcript of grades, a resume and at least one let- ter of recommendation. Applications are available through the Siuslaw High School Student Services. The deadline for applica- tions is April 15.
