These are organized in part through SOLVE (Stop Oregon Vandalism and Litter- ing), which will be holding beach clean-up events in dozens of lo- cations along the Oregon Coast, including Florence. Locally, there will be three con- tact-free and socially distanced events. These include beach clean-ups at the South and North Jetties of the Siuslaw River as well as the Heceta Beach Coun- ty Park near Driftwood Shores. The cleanup events start at 10 a.m. and directions to the precise location of the sign-in tables are available at www.solveoregon. org. Before the Rhododendron Festival was cancelled, a theme of “Rhody Wonder- land” was selected. Floats can follow that theme or come up with their own creative way to celebrate Florence and the Rhodo- dendron Festival. The official Rhododen- dron Festival has been canceled for 2021 and this Oregon Chapter of Elder Climate Action, a member of SOLVE and a leader in the Florence area en- vironmental community. He said event does not indicate au- thorization for unapproved events. While we are creating an alternative for the tradition- al parade, this is a COVID safe event for the Florence community and all partic- ipants will be required to follow the rules outlined. Float entries will be asked not only is the clean-up import- ant, but it is also fun. “This year Pat and I will par- ticipate in two Earth Day cel- ebrations. The first is a beach clean-up spon- sored by SOLVE, which is a great way to kick off the week leading up to Earth Day,” Allen said. “It’s a fun way to meet other like-mind- ed environment activists and do our part to ‘Re- store our Earth.’” For Allen, there are also other ways to show support for the goal of restoring the planet, besides cleaning up after others. He and to park their float in place by 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 16, before the parade attendees arrive. The float will remain in this spot un- til 3:30 p.m., after the last car finishes the route. They also maintain a stretch of beach near their house. They hope to utilize debris they’ve gathering during their cleanup activities in their Earth Day Porch Parade entry. “The display at our home will be four big bags of trash and two containers of cigarettes and micro plastics we collected over three months — totaling over 75 pounds,” Allen said. “We will add signs urging folks not to lit- ter and to join the Adopt a Street program.” To sign up for the porch parade, contact organizer Tina Haydel at teenasan67@gmail.com.
