SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, APRIL 3, 2021 | 3A Community News FACE suspends Winter Music Festival 2022 O h, the weather outside’s im- proving, but the COVID-19 situation’s … disconcerting. Given those two conditions, the Winter Music Festival Com- mittee of FACE (Florence Arts, Culture, and Entertainment) reluctantly decided to suspend plans for the festival in January 2022. After much research, discus- sion, debate and consideration of all the “knowns” of the cur- rent pandemic situation, and a review of the many unknowns, the WMF committee members realized that it would be unwise to commit to an indoor festival at the Florence Events Center a little over eight months from now. “Oregon, and the world, are not reopening to the point where we can commit fully to creating a festival experience of the cal- iber worthy of our patrons and sponsors,” stated Winter Music Festival Chair Kirk Mlinek. FACE has spent weeks poring over press releases, news articles, YouTube live stream concerts and announcements from music producers across the US. “So far, there is no ‘best way’ to ensure the safety of performers and patrons while still providing a top-quality live entertainment experience,” Mlinek said. In particular, Janet Welling- ton, committee member in charge of jam sessions, cited data from the Oregon Health Author- ity and the Mayo Clinic on risk factors and requirements for in- door and outdoor gatherings. “Based on that data, we real- ized we would not be able to plan a festive, cost-effective event,” Mlinek said. FACE, the festival committee and Mlinek thanked everyone who has supported the festival. The committee will continue to monitor all available resources in the days and weeks ahead. “I am certain that we can put a four-day together that will make us all proud if/when the circum- stances allow,” Mlinek said. “Just not now.” — April 2021 is National Child Abuse Prevention Month — National Child Abuse Prevention Month is an annual observance in the United States dedicated to raising awareness and pre- venting child abuse.
