Last Saturday (March 20),
Siuslaw faced off against all
other schools in the Sky-Em
League for a preview of the
cross country district meet.
Both the men’s and women’s
teams won their races by a
landslide,
demonstrating
that the Vikings are still on
course to be league champs.
Siuslaw Athletic Direc-
tor and cross country head
coach Chris Johnson dis-
cussed some of the reasons
his teams have been so suc-
cessful this season.

Mid-coast lakes were stocked
the first couple weeks of
February. The lakes that have
been stocked include: Cleawox,
Munsel, Lost, Carter, Dune and
Alder lakes. All these lakes are
full of trout and are scheduled to
be stocked again in March.
Additional lakes are being
stocked during the first two
weeks of March: Siltcoos, Lost,
Woahink and Mercer lakes.
SIUSLAW RIVER: Winter steel-
head
Winter steelhead fishing con-
tinues to be slow on the Siuslaw.
The river is now low and clear
making it tougher to catch these
fish, but there are still some fish
being caught. The Siuslaw typi-
cally peaks in February and starts
to slow down in March.
Whitaker Creek area is the best
place to catch returning hatchery
fish.
Hatchery fish are also planted
in Lake Creek and are released
into Green Creek. These return-
ing hatchery fish will start to
show up in December and peak
in January and February.
ALSEA RIVER: Winter steel-
head
Winter steelhead fishing con-
tinues to be slow on the Alsea.
The river is now low and clear
making it tough for the bank
anglers on the NF Alsea but con-
ditions are good for the drift
boaters in the mainstem.
Although it has been a slow year
there are still fish to be caught in
the system through the month of
March. The later returning wild
broodstock fish are providing the
majority of the catch now and
typically peak in March.
Reminder: The popular winter
steelhead bank fishery around
the Alsea Hatchery remains open
but the hatchery grounds are
closed to the public. Anglers are
required to park in designated
parking lot to access the river.
The Vikings traveled to Har-
risburg last Friday (March 19)
for their third football game of
the season. Both teams came
into the game in the hunt for
their first win at 0-2, but the Vi-
kings proved unstoppable for the
Eagles.
Coach Sam Johnson said that
after last week’s defeat by San-
tiam Christian, going into this
third match-up of the season at
Harrisburg, “Our main concern
was making sure we played a full
game start to finish.”
This mentality was clearly
in the forefront of the players’
minds as the Eagles won the
coin toss and immediately put
Siuslaw on defense at the start
for first time this season. Camp
Lacouture’s kick was solid, with
the Vikings not only holding the
Eagles but pushing them back an
additional 10 yards by the fourth
down before turning the ball
over on their own 40-yard line.
On Siuslaw’s first possession
of the game, Elijah Blankenship
threw a 40-yard pass to Braydon

Sailors have little luck against Irish in home opener
Mapleton senior JJ Neece
dives into the end zone for a
conversion in the first quarter
against Waldport last week.
By Zeahna Young
Siuslaw News
The Irish were in town last
Thursday night (March 18) as
Mapleton hosted Waldport for
the Sailors’ first home football
game this season. Though the
Sailors played hard throughout
and took an early lead, they un-
fortunately came up short as the
Irish battled back to hand Ma-
pleton a 74-34 loss.
Senior quarterback JJ Neece
started strong, catching the
opening kickoff and carrying it
just beyond the 50-yard line for
the return. They managed three
first downs on the first four plays
then, at 7:08, Neece took the ball
up the middle for a touchdown.
He then swept outside for the
2-point conversion and a quick
8-0 Mapleton lead.

Well it’s been just over a year with the pandemic and I’m apprehensive yet excited to get my second dose of the
Pfi zer vaccine on Wednesday at the FEC. I will still be careful and wear a mask. Will we ever be the same again...
I wonder. Aft er my 3 weeks are up will I feel safe? I guess I’ll feel safer.Weirdly enough we had a brisk year for real
estate even though inventory was way down. Will it open up with more inventory, time will tell.
I do expect more people out and about this summer aft er being cooped up , although last summer was a
surprise with people traveling from many far away states.
Be patient, be safe and take care.
